Car 4-speeds
If I wanted to switch from a truck 3-speed to a car 4-speed is there anything special I need to do or look out for?

Yes, you need to flat shift it, and watch out for the tire smoke. On a serious note though, if the 3-speeds are anything like th350's, you won't have any length problems. Most likely you'll need a th400 style slip yoke. I don't know enough about factory 3 speeds. Hurst makes a shifter just for swapping car 4-speeds into trucks, might want to check that out. Re: Car 4-speeds
Aw crap.....here goes from the bests of me old memory If you are running a saginaw trans(7 bolt side cover), you can replace that with a saginaw 4 spd, or M 20/21 muncie......same lenght , same spline. Be aware that the 68 up truck bells had a larger pilot hole than the cars did . 67 or older on the truck bell was 4 11/16 on the center hole, same as car, wheras 68 on was 5 1/8 ". If you run the saginaw trans, you can use the front bearing retainer from the 3 spd on the 4 spd trans......for the muncie swap, have a machinist cut you a ring, or opt for a 67 or older bell. the truck bell will require a nut & bolt on the bottom 2 bolts, as the car trans is not threaded in the lower ears like the truck(not a problem, my richmond 6 spd is running on a stock 66 bell). Im damn sure there are a few details left out (forgotten over the yrs).... just ask if you need more info..... L

Re: Car 4-speeds
the biggest thing to look out for on car 4 speed's is FINDING ONE !
they are gone ! I used to keep them 3 or 4 at a time , $50 buck's was a good price for one , you can't find a smell of one now !! I should have my rear end kicked for not keeping some of them , I had a T10 BW out of a wrecked when new 72 TA !! I love a 4spd they are really fun to drive ,,,

They are basically an updated muncie, usually not as hammered as the muncies, and have a wider selection of gear ratios. |
