You can install it afterwards, however, if I remember right, there is a supporting bolt on the back(front using direction of truck) that can be a b*tch to get to, and that was before closing off the firewall. I wanted to use bulkhead connectors in the firewall, but, the connectors on the a/c unit were too close to the firewall to allow this to be arranged.
Good luck with your project Cheers Richard

What I have done for people who were painting their cab first was to send the templetes or directions as where to cut the holes that are needed. Then you can paint the cab and then order the system. We have had good success with the Old Air kits. Check them out at www.oldairproducts.com. They have a great customer support staff and have been great to work with.

VintageAir will probably sell you just the block off plate to get you started.

On Hot Rod Power Tour there was a guy with vintage air kit and a shaved firewall. Rather than using the block of plate, he had just a small 4 hose connection (about 4" x 4") with billet type ends. It made for a very nice look. He said it was an extra hundred bucks or so though.

If you order a catalog from Rb's, they sell those bulkhead connectors and several different kits that could possibly be used. I believe their website it www.rbsauto.com . They don't have them on their website, but you can order a catalog if interested. I have an old air kit and it came with a couple block off plates that I welded shut.

The website has nothing compared to their catalog. Their catalog is huge. Glad to help.

You might want to check out Vintage Air. I know a lot of people go this way to clean up the firewall.
