setting presets on original radios - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Only had a little time tonight so I am tearing down and restoring (sorta) an original AM radio - I have cleaned out all the dirt dobbers, took lots of pictures to share after I make sure it works, noted the repairs to make and got most of it working -

What is the procedure for setting the presets? Right now, the dial allows movement of the setting all the way to the left - only 3/4 of the way to the right. The first button only moves the arm a bit, the second, to the center and the rest of the buttons don't do enough to say so. It seems to be all loosened up and I've lubed it. Any help is much appreciated!

locate konb where you want the station, pull the preset out then push all the way in if memory serves correctly.

no offense, but I had to giggle and look for your age in your profile.
It's interesting, I guess when you grow up with 60's & 70's vehicles, this setting process is standard. It's kinda like saying a can of oil I guess...

Unfortunately as a kid, none of my old vehicles had working radios - and then, those that did were quickly tossed for the ol' spark-o-matic! (I think it was in like 5 different cars during it's life span) hahaha I kinda knew someone would make a reference to age....

Related to the "can of oil" is the phrase "you're welcome" - it's been replaced with "no problem"....

I'm 39, about 8 years ago I had a girlfriend that had a daughter. I asked the daughter to hand me another can of oil while I was changing oil in the cars... she looked for a few seconds (oil right under her nose) then said "I don't see a can of oil" I had to laugh and correct myself and say a quart of oil, then explain that they used to be in can's... She just laughed at me telling me I was old.

I worked a few years ago with two youngish women. One day I brought in a Hendix CD on real low. Just before lunch one of the girls [early 20s] asked who was on the CD, she liked it and wanted to buy a copy. I said Hendrix and both gals got this blank stare.... Oil Can, indeed!

I still have the oil spout in my tool box, can't seem to bring myself to throw it out. Maybe they'll bring the carboard cans back someday... I have to admit they were really messy if you didn't do it just right, can you dig it!!

I was going through some boxes of tools, and i pulled out an oil spout, and laughed.

My wife asked what it was, and then gave me a blank stare as i tried to explain.

I've got a few years on you 67 cst - but it's funny, for the life of me, I drew a complete blank on the presets.... My wife is 8 years younger than me, during a conversation with a buddy, I made the comment, ".... and we were playing one of such and such's ALBUMS and ....." She looked at me and said "A what? what's an album?"..... she always does that just to remind me I'm a bit older!.... hahahahaha

In a box of old stuff in my garage I have one of those oil can spouts, a beer can with the tabs that pulled off, and our old "ON" TV cable box. You remember that - the first "cable tv" - only one channel, just one big knob, on and off. Hahaha.

I have a few old cans of oil Penzoil unopened than came with my truck. I wonder if they will be worth something someday. I also have the spout as well.

I might be wrong on this, but it seems like you could get even more preset stations if you pulled button 1/2 out at the same time (and 2/3 and 3/4 and 4/5), so you actually could have 9 preset stations. An old salesman from a Chevy dealer taught me this trick, but it has been so long ago I dont remember if it was our radios that the trick applied to? Are there even 9 AM radio stations anymore??
