Factory Sliding Window?

I just had a thought that never hit me until now. When a truck was ordered with a slider,I believe they all came with standard window gaskets.Prove it wrong. But,that`s been my observation. All the trucks I`ve known to have factory sliders have had the non-trimmed rubber.I`ve added a slider and never had the stainless fit just right.
I`m curious to see this tidbit played out.

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

Special-K,

I believe you are correct. I have a 72 as you speak of above which has the "no trim" rear widow seal and just recently ran across another 72 that was the same. Also, I think they only came with clear glass, no "soft-ray" tint.

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

A little off topic, but are there rebuild kits for the slider? Mine has no lock and the windows slide past the middle. I haven't seen anything but a cheesy aftermarket plastic lock.

Mine has a slider with the SS trim. I do not know if it is an OE or aftermarket slider. It looks different than all the rest I have seen.

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

When I was a young pup one of my first jobs was in a manufacturing plant for the bed "toppers" for pick-ups. We also did customizing etc. Which included installing rear window sliders. Well I've probably installed several hundred rear window sliders through out the years and I must have installed dozens of 67 to 72 sliders. If it had ss trim in the origional window seal, it went back in with the same ss trim. I also had to have installed dozens of rear sliders for dealers. I was told by a big GM dealer in Atlanta, back in the late 70's that there were no "factory" sliders. They were all installed by other companies either at the dealer or out on the ready line at the plant. Which I believed to be true because I installed sliders at the Atlanta plant several times. Things may have chamges, I know that reinstalling that ss trim took some finesse and was a real pita.

I suppose it could have been done both ways, with or without, but here is a pic of mine. No trim and it's all original, except for the replacement lock(plastic).

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

Kbs71,can you recall if the ones you installed at the Atlanta plant had trimmed gasket?Or,did you install in trimmed gasket.I`m talking at the ready line, not the dealers.I know...long time ago and prolly didn`t care to take notice.
I think that all factory sliders ommitted the trim.

Truth be told we were talking about the window trim and window, not the entire truck, hence why I made the comment about the plastic replacement lock.

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

The key point is that the glovebox has to have the "slider" RPO code. Even w/that, that's not to say people haven't changed things over the years with individual trucks, but I think the overall concensus is that they did not come w/the SS trim if factory equipped w/a rear slider. Again, many variables in the equation including possible supply problems at the factories (they were made in several locations), education of the workforce and perhaps, selective application/enforcement of GM policies at individual plants.

Ol' Buck, I just priced one at 99.95 from Classic Parts of America in Kansas City. They have the gaskets and trim available also. It is a black frame, which I think will look better (fingers crossed).

Re: Factory Sliding Window?

Back when I installed them at the plant it had the "Rear Window Sliding Glass" option already on the SPID. But it had a regular one piece window installed. I would usually go out there with about 20 sliders and be given numbers to trucks to install them on. Like i said, if they has ss trim it went back with ss trim, whatever the origional rubber was holding the window in place, also held the slider either with or without the ss trim. There is a special tool made for installing the trim. I'm sure it can be had at most auto tooling specality stores. Let me get some sleep and I'll look tonight and see if I can find one.
