What kind of winch is best?
Thinking of a winch at some point, but which type is best? I dont care for the electric for a host of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that everone has them. On to the other types, PTO, or hydraulic. My dad had a PTO winch years ago, and it served him well. Thinking of going that route, but what are the good options out there? Plus I like them more hidden then out front and big. Any thoughts?

Re: What kind of winch is best?
I loved my old ramsey pto. Still have it laying around. Wish I could find a use for it. Havent heard to many good things about the milemarker hydraulic winches but ramsey has a ton of industral hydraulic winches that you could use. I thought of running one years ago and using a pto box to run the pump but by that time it was just easier to bolt on a pto winch. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Re: What kind of winch is best?
Why the big dislike for electric?
Their the most popular because their easy to install, easy to use and they work. (usually) IMO, winch to winch comparison, you'll have less hassles with electric overall. As far as one not sticking out, install it between the frame rails behind a stock bumper. Last edited by vtblazer; 05-29-2007 at 07:17 AM. |

Re: What kind of winch is best?
I like Ramsey.I like to buy from a companey that spacializes and has forever. The electric vs pto debate...If you have a good beefed-up charging system with an electric winch, you`re good.A pto only works with engine running, but an engine won`t run with a down battery.
I like the good ol`pto just because I had one and it was so cool sitting in the driver seat and driving the winch with my gas peddle. With a good sounding V8,that is so awesome.

Re: What kind of winch is best?
I'm running a pto winch but not hooked up,right now it's a hand crank, more for looks than anything, but there If I need it.I think it came off an old power-wagon,not sure, believe it's a 1951 model according to serial #.

Re: What kind of winch is best?
A friend of mine had a receiver mounted electric. It was nice because you could mount it front or rear once he installed a tow hitch in the front. It worked very well and you could take it off all together. he kept it in a bed mounted tool box.

Re: What kind of winch is best?
i knew it would come up sooner or later... i happen to run CNC machines for a company that makes hydraulic power winches.....and about the only advantage i can see to them for 4x4 trucks is that they are a heck of alot stronger and odviously have a higher stall rating.....but like the other guys said....if you dround out your motor in a mud hole you are screwed because they work off of hydraulic pressure... but if you are interested check this site out....

Re: What kind of winch is best?
I agree with all of you! Stuck in a mud hole with engine out, you got to have a lot of back-up electric power to go very far. In most aplications engine runs fine. Seems pto is pretty good unless they are prone to trouble?...

Re: What kind of winch is best?
PTO is the way to go if you can. My wife's ex-mother-in-law has a sweet '70 with factory PTO. I tried to get her to sell it a long time ago but she said she could never afford to replace it.
I worked as a tow driver a few years ago and my truck had 2 rear mounted PTO's that were great.

Re: What kind of winch is best?
PTOs are about invinsible. They`re just a low rpm gear box, kinda hard to wear out or break.
