Looking back
I know I have been asking a lot of questions but this is a good one. Looking back, what would you all have done differently? I am still looking for my truck and keep going back and forth between different options although I know I want a 2wd shortbed either fleetside or stepside.
Thanks Last edited by the_goat; 05-28-2007 at 09:37 PM. |

I just bought the first one I found that I thought was a good deal. Lucky for me it was a '67 short fleet - 454/TH400..... LockDoc

Re: Looking back
Not bought the first one that I bought. Knowing all the right places to look for rust will make you a much more powerful buyer.

Re: Looking back
Drive a bunch of them. Look at even more. Make sure you're getting what you want, because you'll probably put a lot of time and money into it.
I finally ended up with my 72 Blazer after having a 72 1/2 ton, a 70 3/4 ton, a 66 GMC (I really liked it, but if I'd looked closer, I would have known it was headed for the recycler when I bought it) and all of them had their good points. You just need to look around to make sure you know what you want and that what you're looking at is going to be it. |

Re: Looking back
hind sight is 20/20 , I wish I had known when I was a teenager NOT to buy or have anything to do with truck's or truck part's that had originally been bought new here in southrust virginia where I live ,
as far as with my 67 C10 I have right now (THAT LIVED IN TENNESSEE FOR 40 YEAR'S) I would not do anything different ,

Re: Looking back
looking back, i would have waited until i bought my house (closing on July 2nd) to start my bag install. It really sucks driving 2 hours just to work on something you can't drive. I had planned to start around xmas, but didn't get started until around March. Now, i'll be lucky to be done before the good guys show the weekend after the 4th of july.

Re: Looking back
At least I know someone feels my pain. But on the bright side, I would never have gained all of the experience I have now if it wasn't for my POS.

Re: Looking back
If I'd have known it needed as much as it does, I never would have sold my Dart to buy it.

Re: Looking back
Wish I would have told my wife I was going to buy two trucks when I sold her on the idea in the first place. I really need a donor truck. Would probably be less expensive in the long run. Now I'm damned to seek parts on a tight budget.

Re: Looking back
From here on out I will be more decisive on what I will hire out or do myself.
Looking back I have bought vehicles and thought I am going to do this, this and that, I shoud be done by August,......( a 85 landcruiser project ) now I have all the donor body parts from the 89 landcruiser in the back of the 67 cst, I sold the 85 to my brother fairly cheap, the rest of the donor went to scrap because my buddy wanted his trailer back. If/when I look at the next one I will remember my strengths and weak points. And also look at cost of gearing up to do certain repairs. (tools, time to do it.) I probably wont buy rust wagons or something that has been mickey moused 3 times. I am good at most mechanicals, finding good tires, cleaning the windows and taking pictures. |

Re: Looking back
I rode around in it for 13 years, I drove the hell out of it for the next twenty-two years. What I did right was keep it maintained, but I wish I had all the nostalgia items still with the truck. I think that stuff is so cool now. I've done plenty stupid things to my truck.
Looking back just this last weekend, I rattle-canned the air cleaner and stuck tape over the original sticker. Part of the foil sticker came off when I took the tape off. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Re: Looking back
Over the years i have had many projects cars and homes and other things.I have learned to buy the closest to what you want in the best shape you can because every dime more you spend up front will save you money on things you have to hire out in the long run.I don't like to start a project until I have the equipment and parts.I can do almost any mechanical repair but don't always have the equipment,so I tend to try to get a project with the things I don't have the stuff for already done.

Re: Looking back
well put Andy!
unless you do body work: When you look at old trucks, remember, no matter how cool the wheels may look, or any other thing they've hung on the truck that catch's your eye, it's alot easier/cheaper to get a motor fixed then a rusted out body. |

Re: Looking back
I would have spent more time looking for a better truck, especially considering that I'm doing a "driving rebuild"...
