my guess would be partly EGR but check engine shouldcome n from it, m bro has a 93 tahoe blazer with 4.3 vortec, and ti sounded like sh*t, we pulled it off, and it was really built up with carbon, and was stickin, cleaned it up, started it once with out it on, blew some carbonoutta the motor, then put it backon, ran way better.. hope I helped,

Definitely an electrical problem. Dist cap may have a hairline crack and moisture causing it to arc between terminals or to ground, also could be wires arcing. Get in total darkness and look at engine while it is running, you may be able to see arc or hear it.

Hmmm, good question. Start the truck, and put your hand over the exhaust pipe to see if the exhaust is getting good flow. If it's not, then your cat is clogged. I don't know why it would only run bad intermitently though. One thing you could try before spending money is to remove the cat, drive a hole through it with a pipe, and stick it back on. Fire it up and see if it runs any better, if not , at least you didn't lose anything.

A quick check for the exhaust flow is to drill a 3/8 or so hole in front of and behind the cat. If there is a huge pressure difference between the two, the cat is clogging.....

I am having very similar problems with our 29 S-10 POS blazer. Which 4.3 do you have, the W or the Z? (W is the vortec)
The EGR will seldom set off the check engine light on the Vortec. It is a very crappy design, you can clean it, replace it, but it'll get clogged up real quick with more carbon.
If it is/was running rich, like when it is not fireing on all 6, the verter will get clogged. It also seems more sensitiv than any other catilitic converter i have ever seen.

I beleive this engine is equipt with (ESC)and it can malfunction and not send a code.
The ECM controls timing through the ESC module , knock sensor, and refrence signal from dist. There may be a problem somewhere in this system that is causing the ECM to retard the timing (up to 20 degres) and that is causing a rich condition and heating up the cat. I feel that the chery red cat is the result of another problem and not the problem itself. It will be a problem if It keeps getting red hot and fuel soaked.Good luck with this and please let us know what the problem was when you fix this so we can all benefit.

I don't understand why the Check engine light is not on if the condition we are discussing involves a rich mixture. The O2 sensor should pick this up and set the code. I guess this computer stuff is great when it works. I had a MAF go bad on me and no code was set. The car stalled anytime you let RPM go below 2000 RPM. Once I unplugged it the car ran closer to normal. I think it had to do with the problem had to stay in long enough to set the code.

I had a problem with my 88 S-10 where it would fall on it's face and try to die when you pulled up to a stop. it would be totally intermittent, unpredictable. I never could figure out what it was. no codes. I finally put a microswitch and light on the egr valve and a light on the control selenoid. It turned out to be the selenoid was not sealing. it would let a vacuum signal get to the egr and would open it and cause a lean condition at idle. can't remember if the 4.3 has this conotrol selenoid but that may be a start. I realize that this problem doesn't explain all of the symptoms you have but it may be a start.

Hi,

I have a 93 GMC Jimmy with the 4.3 Vortex motor, and several years ago it starting running rough off and on, and my milages dropped drastically. Took it to several shops to have all of them tell me that they could find nothing wrong. Took it to a good shop and they found that the fuel injection system was faulty. Had that replaced, roughly around $1300.00. BUT, because I had registered myself with GMC as the new owner (2nd owner) of the Jimmy, two months after having the repair done, GMC sent me a recall notice on the fuel injection unit. I sent them the info that I had already had mine replaced and GMC reimbursed the repairs.

Might want to check into that....
