Workin on wood bed progress

I started working on getting my bed ready for some nice wood. I am gonna use a wood called iron wood, its really strong and looks great. We use it on docks at work. at lunch we took the plywood out thats been in there for a while and cleaned up some of the frame. I started spray painting the frame a little today, only had one can but am going to parts store tonight. we are gonna work on it some more tomorrow. I will post pics as I get stuff done, should be finished next week. We will be making it during breaks and after work.

Very slow progress, just took leavin the plywood out and painting a little more, painted driveshaft and ground down frame bracketts a little because we are gonna weld the two cross beams on that arent bolted to the bed. Mounted the spare tire haha. used the screwdriver to pick off lots of caked on mud from axle, wanna wire brush it before rattlin it, so it will look a little better.

that iron wood is some hard stuff. i remember when i was a kid in upstate ny we came across some nobody knew what it was. we sent a slice to the university and they identifyed it as iron wood. it would dull a chain fast and if it was not real bright outside you could acualy see sparks coming from the chain like you were cutting a dirty log.it should hold up very well

cleaned the axle up alot and painted it. I have painted almost everything back there now with black primer, might get some gloss and make it look shiny. Hopefully the guys will stay after work tomorrow weld it for me to get ready for the wood.

Re: Workin on wood bed progress

Finally got supports welded in , cleaned drums up, pretty much all flat black now,not the best paint ever but I like it. gettin closer, but slow progress. The bed is not too level, but the bracketts line up alright. probly gonna weld some small maybe 1" angle iron along the bedsides to keep them straight.

Re: Workin on wood bed progress

not too good of a pic, my frame is bent under the back of the cab, so I had to weld on a piece of angle to move the bed over to make the sides of the bed look right over the rear tires. the bracketts on the bed are supposed to mount on the frame. I had to lengthen the trailing arm to compensate some too.

Re: Workin on wood bed progress

Finally... its felt like forever since I have had time to work on this. We cut the wood today, its about 1/2" too long, but just because I would rather have it too long than too short, gonna work on it when I go home next week. still have to figure out how much to space in between.
Gonna run a router down the tops of the boards, and put some metal strips in to hold the wood down.

This wood is gonna look so cool when its done.
