Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
Well my sagging cut springs are bugging me so they got to go.
Here is a pic of what I got. My first ? is what it heck is the big steel pipe for......? With no instructions to this stuff I only know where the bags go, the airline, and the valves.lol Anybody want to tell me where all the other stuff goes please feel free. I guess there are brackets there for a leaf spring truck that I don't need?? No too sure. Well it is a start. Going to take the bed off now and see what is next.

Not too sure about all the parts, but most people with trucks around here put the dog in the box.

Re: Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
Exactly!
The big steel pipe is prob intended for making the 'adapters' required to put the rear bags in. But on the 63-72 trucks, the rear bags will bolt-in w/o adapters or brackets. Use the pipe for whatever you need it for.....

FRONT: the "cups" in the picture are used on the bottom of the bags and the "A" shaped plate is used to mount the top of the bag to the cross member. REAR: the bags bolt in place of the OEM coils springs in the rear. no brackets needed. bolts and a few holes need drilling. my guess is the pipe is to be used for the "C" notch Last edited by Shane; 06-08-2007 at 11:29 PM. |

Re: Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
that pipe is to make adapter cups for the rear, notice the 4 flat circle template pieces to bolt up a bag too.. you cut the pipe to desired lenght and weld those on the ends

but, that is way more pipe than anyone is ever gonna need. Also, if you're truck is a coil spring truck, you will not need to make any brackets. Just bolt the bags in place of the coils and you're set. I do also agree that you could use that pipe to make some pretty big c-notches in the frame. That saves you about $100 by not buying a bolt in kit. if you're truck is coil, you also do not need those 4 flat circle plates. The short pipe things with the flat plates welded to them, those are you cups for the front bags. All you do is bolt them to the bottom of the bag and let them "float" in the coil spring pocket. I would suggest cutting them down to 1" in height though. that will get you another 2" of drop. the 2 funny lookin plates that have a bend to them, those are you front top mounts for your bags. you just drill some holes in them and bolt them to your upper control arm. mount your bag to them first though even if you're not running a compressor and tank (don't see one in the pic) I am guessing you will need way more air line and fittings. The other thing i don't see are your gauges. even w/o a tank and compressor, you're gonna want gauges. hope that helps |

Re: Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
The kits are generic in nature so the amount of pipe is to make rear cups & the c-sections.
Most of the air 'kits' for these trucks do not bolt the bag directly to the frame. That's why so many of us have been moaning about drilling those freakin' large X huge holes for the air fitting & mounting bolts upside-down in cramped conditions. By making your own rear cups, they can bolt in w/one bolt on top, one bolt on bottom just like the factory coils. The air fittings are contained in the 'hat' on top of the spring. This is how I did my first air set-up. But.... I quickly realized that this method severely infringed on the amount of drop I could get. So the next go-around I bolted 'em straight in.

Re: Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
I know what you meant & you know what you meant but just to clarify for those that might not know: The upper plates bolt to the upper control arm crossmember.

Re: Got my AirBag parts Now the work begins
Big Help Guys thanks.
Now I know that I don't need the pipe, and the 4 flat pucks, Rears bolt right in with a big hole and two small holes.(lots of drilling) Fronts: Bolt to plate, plate to crossmember, and bolt the cups to the bottom of the bag;which float in the bottom of the spring rest.

I would be interested in seeing How Low it would go with this methed... Does this save drilling the big hole in the frame for the air line?? I don't intend on getting it into the grass, I just want the air ride and small drop. (New tires and rims level with fenders, well maybe a little under) I'll keep the pics coming for ya's Garage sale today to make room for the project. Yes, building a 'hat' means no drilling all the holes in the bottom of the frame rail. The 'hat' only needs to be tall enough to provide clearance for the air fitting since that's the tallest thing on the top of the bag. The shorter the air fitting.... the shorter the 'hat'. Also. . ..... I originally used the Firestone bags that would be the equivalent of the 7" Slams. What I found was it had a tendency for a 'bouncy' ride @ the required air pressure I needed for my desired ride height (about 8" drop w/30psi). You may not have a problem w/the Slams since the rubber is supposed to be denser & more stable. I switched to 6" Slams so it would require slightly more air pressure which should equal a better ride (I haven't driven it since revamping the suspension).
