What all is involved in cab swap
Hey guys,
I am restoring a 68 lwb fleet side, but my current box is too far gone to be repaired i believe. The previous owner tried, but failed miserabley. I am currently on the prowl for a relatively rust free or at least repairable replacement cab (not having very much success, so any suggestions on where to find one would be great as well), but my biggest question is what happens when i do find one with the VIN and tags, title, etc. Might be a stupid question , but i'm still relatively new at this. THANK GOD FOR THIS SITE THOUGH! , so many great ideas, suggestions, and members! |

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
There are a few threads on this somewhere, I cant remember what the final census was. I'm in the same boat, my roof line is shot and I need a new cab also.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
I just swapped out VIN tags, using NOS rivets, everything else stayed the same

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
I thought my cab was gone too, but then I decided to shave the drip rails. They were badly rusted. Once I stipped them it was a faily easy repair. I replaced the corners, rockers and floor pans and I was out the door with only about 2 large invested. Came out good.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
I like the look of the box Jon.
More picts lease and a reassembly step by step would also be cool. I'll be there in November and will need the reassemble advice. |

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
Are you looking for a small back window cab? I have seen one on a 1-2 ton cab and chassie up here in Nisku. The hood and fenders are different but I think the cab is the same as the 1/2 tons. Looks really clean from being so high off the ground all its life. Let me now and i could maybe get some pics.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
that would be awesome kelsfine69! still kinda wondering on how you go about with that VIN, if just puting the original in the new cab is illegal, what do you do? is it a whole new bill of sale? again thanks for all the input.
I was actually thinking of starting a build thread for my 68 turner, especially now that i'm gettin more time to work on it, and am making progress. i didn't plan to do the frame up, but definately worty it in the end i'm thinking. tons more hours ahead of me. |

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
It's a fact that some people swap the old vin to the new cab, but the legality of that is questionable...
If you want to be completely legal, contact your local dmv, and they will give you all the info you need.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
You need a title for the new VIN. At least here in the US you do. I had to use a salvage title on my last truck to replace the cab.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
so the title would be most likely the same as a "bill of sale"? so if i write up a bill of sale with the seller when i buy the cab it'll be just like i'm buying the vehicle, and when its registered just register using the bill of sale of the cab i guy? haha thats how i interpret it?:S hopefully i'm on the right road.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
Last ones, If your interested offer him $400 bucks. I think it has a different floor in it being a bigger truck. It has high humps right where your high beam switch should be.You could cut out the floor but I dont know how involved you want to get.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
this cab was toast and I brought it back by striping the drip rails and patching the gap. Not hard and it looks cool.

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
that cab doesn't look too bad, same interior color as my current one, and in wayyyyy better shape. thanks for the pics, and all the effort of the cab! i am interested in the cab. the drip rails on my truck are in good shape, not rusted out at all, its the hack job the guy did b4 i got the truck of trying to repair the floor, cab corners, and rocker pannells. 80% of the floor is patched with fiber glass:S
That yellow cab looks awesome!, i'm gonna most likely be removing my cab on saturday and seein exactly how bad the damage is once its off, outlook not good though. |

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
Grinder with a cutoff disk and weld the seam and grind flush add a little filler. I think its time consuming

Re: What all is involved in cab swap
You might just want to tip the cab on its back and cut the floor out and weld in a new replacement with new rockers and cab corners. Might be easier in the long run. New floors are out now and if your taking the cab of then it not that hard. Mmmm fresh floor
