motor mount question

was finally able to work on the '72 this weekend,got the 6cyl. out, changed flys andother stuff. was told that i would have to move the org. motor mounts forward 1 hole on the frame rail. when i did that the top holes were fine but there is no coresponding hole in the cross member for the botom of the mount. do i need adifferent mount or do i need to drill a new hole?

to do that, you'll need the small block style mounts.
you can leave the towers in the old location, it'll just put the engine close to the wall. Won't need to replace driveshaft or linkages this way either.

I had to do this a couple weeks ago on a friend's truck. I6 towers work in their original location with V8 mounts. But, the V8 will be very close to the firewall with minimal clearance for the distributor.

my motor was mounted in the I6 location, and worked fine...

couple weeks ago i installed the correct motor mounts, moving the motor forward, and I lucked out... my truck had a TH-350 with the short tailshaft, and i installed a 700r4, and it just so happened, that the amount th motor moved forward was exactly the same as the difference in length between the two tranny's, so my driveshaft mounted up without any modification

i was told that i would have to make some slight modifications( with a big hammer) to get the distributor to not hit the wall, if i left the mounts in the I6 location. also i'm using the 3spd man. trans. thats already in the truck. do i have to move the trany forward also, if i move the towers forward? thanks.

I disagree with the hammer. I have done this to 2 trucks. A 71 and a 69 and they both had enough clearance for the HEI. You can't leave the cap on when installing but it does clear with plenty of room. You will need a short, slim screwdriver to fasten the cap because it's so close but no interference.

i just went through this yesterday. i have a donor truck done the correct way , and receiving one is a 350 on the 6 cylinder tower mounts. i was wondering why there was so much room in one and not the other. i would recommend getting the correct mounts for the front holes. although plenty of people seem to have it done the otherway with no problems.

So what is the correct holes for each factory motor configuration? REar holes for I6? Front holes for SB and BB? I got my truck as a dissamebled 68 that was originally a SB/3spd truck. It will become a SB/700r4. What holes to use?

Hook the trans up to the engine, align the trans on the trans crossmember mount, and see where the front mounts need to be. We wanted to use the V8 mounts but with the factory 4 spd that was behind the I6 we had to use the rear engine mounts with I6 towers becasue of where the trans sat...
