Getting mad at my brakes
Okay, my driver's side front brakes are sticking. I changed to the Early Classic Brake hoses, and also changed the caliper. Any other suggestions???
I was thinking the proportioning valve, don't know what else is left.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
Brian, just go buy yourself a Colorado and bring me the truck,I will figure it out and take care of it so you can quit stressing.
I haven't a clue unless there is a problem with the new caliper or the rotor has a run out issue.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
Are the rubber flex hoses that attached to the caliper original?
The inside of the hose can deterioate and cause caliper sticking. |

Did you make any other changes before this issue arose

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
nope, changed the other caliper out. I was painting them and broke off a bleeder screw on the pass side, but the driver's side just started this a while back.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
I used to work on school busses, and on one Chevy bus I was working on, I had 1 front wheel that was sticking. Tried everything, calipers, hoses, master cylinder and pads. Finally in frustration, I changed front brake pad brand...and believe it or not.....no more sticky brake. Weird

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
Is everything clean?
My left front drum was sticking on my 69 this spring and I took it apart, nothing looked wrong. I cleaned everything with brake clean and put it back together and no more problems. Could you have gotten grease on the pads when installing/reassembling?

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
I was thinking maybe the rotor isn't true or maybe is warped a bit.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
I would try jacking it up and applying the brakes, Then crack the bleeder screw loose. If it doesnt release I would say you still have a stiff caliper.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
how are the sliders? If they are stuck, take them out (if you can) clean them up and grease them up with brake lube.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
What about bearing pre-load? Can you wobble the disk (side to side) with your hands? Did you torque the axle nut to spec, back it off and re-torque. Maybe a slight blockage in the front brake line from the tee to the hose.
Mysteries like this are tough to noddle out but there's great satisfaction when solved. Hang in there.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
I agree, the little sleeves that the bolts go thru, I would take the caliper off and not only be sure these are free of debri (these should slide in and out but with some resistence), but also be sure your caliper piston slides in and out (if may not be easy, but I would think you could push it back in by hand...???)

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
Just to make sure we are on the same page.
I have a front disc on a 70, but it looks like it's probably a late 70's disc brake setup. So it's the 52 pads. At most parts stores it's D52, MKD52 The ones with the hole on the outer pad.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
okay, got to playing with these things a little today. everything seems to be clean and moving freely. When i spin the driver's side tire it makes it about another 1/2 turn and comes to a stop. I can see the outer pad move up about a 1/4 inch and then grab the rotor. I opened the bleeder, but no difference.

Re: Getting mad at my brakes
looks like the rotors are warped. By the way you described it, it is beyond machinable. Look into a new set of rotors. If your rotors now are brand new with no miles on them i would looking into taking them back.
