changine ball joints
the uppers bolt in no sweat
the lowers have to be pressed in? can i do this at home without a press? it's a 72 1/2 ton, 2 wheel drive. edit: i typed the subject too fast, my bad. "changing" Last edited by matthufham; 06-21-2007 at 03:18 PM. |

The lower joints can be "manually" replaced i.e. big hammer. You should be able to rent a ball joint press from the local parts store which makes the installation easier. To do it manually, remove the steering knuckle from the lower bj. Support the control arm at the outer edge, remove the grease boot and using a big hammer, drive the bj out striking it on the lip sticking up above the control arm. To install, place the new joint up through the hole then support the control arm under the new ball joint allowing considerable weight to be applied. Next, using something blunt, drive the control arm down over the ball joint. Install new zerk, dust boot and steering knuckle.

Are you removing the A-arms? I tried the above method (to an extent) and ended up ruining a ball joint, buying another, and using a press at my uncle's shop. Not saying it can't be done, just saying I screwed it up. To me, it would be worth borrowing/renting a press. Top ones are easy, grind out old rivets, install new with bolts. Be carefull removing the ball joints with the spring!

With the ball joint press available for rent for FREE at most auto parts stores....Do the big SKIP on the above manual stated method.

I got my 4-n-1 service kit (ball joint and ujoint, and some other duties) from Harbor freight for like $20. It worked great.

if i don't have to, i don't want to remove the control arms. i got new tie rods, ball joints, rotors and bearings. and i plan to cut my coils and upgrade the steering gearbox all at once
