402BBC value?
I have a 402 BBC out of a 71 3/4 ton. It has been punched .030 over and is still in pretty good shape. Not so much looking for street value, but value over all..? Are these in demand or are they just boat anchors?

If someone is building a truck and wants to keep it original then its worth something. Most guys I think just go to a 454 though

Good luck finding a buyer, I was trying to get rid of mine and most people wanted me to give it to them. You have to find someone that needs it to get a decent price. I wish I would have kept mine now.

The hardest part is finding all the accessories brackets. If it has them its worth more.

Just for an idea I bought a 70 402 with 820 heads original bore but in need of a rebuild for 250.00 and a 72 402 with truck heads for 200.00. It sucks if you sell one but great if you are wanting one. I think their value is way underestimated because you can still make great power with them. Like it was mentioned before the 454's are the motor of choice due to cubic inches even all the magazines have basically stopped saying anything about them. I would never call them boat anchors, after all they are factory bored 396's. Do yourself a favor and wrap it in plastic and hold on to it if you have the space.

I'm not sure about a dollar value, but I have a 396 bored to a 402 and love it. It's also the original moter, so that helps. It's got more power than I can get to hook up since I don't have posi traction; I'm not sending it down the track anytime soon, but it's impressive leaving a stop light.
I guess what I'm trying to say is it's far from a boat anchor IMO. Ronnie

I agree it's not a boat anchor. but also agree that it's only worth what a particular buyer is willing to pay.
And for the life of me I can not figure out why people shy away from them (402) but the same people will be all over a 396 they are one in the same. If it is together and running that is a plus when I am buying but not critical as long as I can get things checked out before I buy on the sellers dime if the spec's do not check out good. So if it's together your best bet is to leave it that way. As for price I have seen them go as low as 100 to 150 and as high as 800 to 1000 so go figure. It's a crazy world and it really does depend on if you find the right buyer when you are selling. RJ22...

I upgraded from a 396 30 over to a 454 for mostly performance reasons. Sure the 396 was tired, but I could have rebuilt it for less than $1k and had a decent, reliable and strong pulling motor. They're not the ultimate, but they aren't bad either.
IMO they're comparable to a SBC 383 in output potential, but for a lot less investment cost, IMO (some are sure to argue this). If you have a use for it, rebuild it and use it. If not, oil and store it for that next project. In cash value if it runs well and doesn't need anything major, I'd think it's worth $500 to $750 or there abouts. Maybe more If an interested buyer is looking for that particular engine.

Im a fan of the 402. Well any BBC for that matter. I run a 402 in my boat, with not a whole lot of work they run hard, and put out a ton of torque. Those old heads are easy to punch out to 2.19 intake and helps alot. I say at least keep it for later or build it.

Thanks for everyones in put. I think I will keep it around. It is all complete right down to the brackets. It ran good every time I needed it until a month or so ago when I went to start it up just for the sake of letting it run, it cranked fine started to start, but then sort of back fired and died. Now the the thing is seized up. I cant turn it over by hand or with the srarter. I had problems with this motor before with the lifters seizing and breaking the rocker arm once. Maybe that is what happend again.
