Very short trip.............

Well Friday I had to return home from St Louis on my way to Springfield IL. Al least I didn't have to be broken down on the side of the interstate in St Louis during Friday rush hour. Was getting hot enough and wouldn't cool back down that it was missing really bad. I adjusted the carb back to the origninal adjustments and went to a friends house. (Was very lean). Always make sure somone knows what they are doing before you let them turn screws on your Holley. Also found that the radiator cap was not holding any kind of pressure. Truck ran great coming the rest of the way home but it had cooled off pretty much. I will be testing it out the next few days to see if I repeat what had happened. Can't really believe that a cap would not allow things to cool off going down the Hwy.

Years ago I worked at a gas station in Phoenix while going to school. Most of the cars that were overheating had some type of compromise to the cooling pressue system (cap seal gone, hose hole, etc.). The pressure in the system allows it to run at a higher temp without boiling. If air is allowed in the system and it can't maintain the pressure, boiling point falls. First thing we did was to get it cooled down, then ran a pressure check on the cap and system to find the problem. Usually a hose or cap, sometimes we found it was blown intake maniford or head gasket. This was in the mid-70's when things were relatively simple, no electronics etc. Glad you found the problem, you might want to check the timing, it will make a difference too.

Just another dumb thing that happened to me,bad radiator cap was my problem on a 76 3/4 350.The old truck run fine until a trip on I29 to St Joe,it started getting hot and i would pull over and it took a while but would cool down and after three times of this it was getting old.Finally i held the throttle at highway speeds and watched the bottom hose suck shut.shut it down and after a little cooling time dug thru the tool box and found a roll of wire.

Wound the wire inside the hose and filled it with ditch water.Made the rest of the trip with out a hitch but found the radiator cap at fault..........As far as I know the wire is still in it
