Hauling your truck
For those who have done it, who do you use to rent a trailer when hauling your truck? I rented a trailer from U'Haul and they said it would fit fine as long as I did not have taller tires than stock in which I don't. I do however have some fat 295-50R15s tire on it. The body barely misses getting dinged up but I'll be needing 4 new tires as I basically had to put the new motor to work in getting the front tires in between the fenders. I got it on but its to late to change the current config now. I'm just looking for an idea for the future. Oh yea, anybody in Cherry point NC on here want to help me offload this SOB Wednesday night or Thursday AM??

I keep a stock set of wheels and tires around for this very purpose. They don't have to be anything special as long as they hold air.... LockDoc

Re: Hauling your truck
Got to have the stock steelies to get in between the Uhaul trailer fenders. My 2wd Blazer had barely bigger than stock tires on it and it was a chore...had to get a running start!

Re: Hauling your truck
I'm just wondering why the idiot at U-haul even mentioned the height, obviously, that doesn't matter one bit, however, again, painfully obviously, the width does.

Re: Hauling your truck
I hauled my 65 on a uhaul trailer and it got some damage to the door and cab corner from bouncing around when I hauled from nc to ks. I have a 295-50-15 also and they don't fit on a uhaul trailer.

Re: Hauling your truck
I used a U Haul to bring my 72 to Tampa from St. Louis. Had to get stock steelies and some ratty tires to fit it on the trailer. Once that was done I'll say the trailer was a pleasure to tow.

Re: Hauling your truck
I put my 70 LWB on a UHaul auto transport and everything fit real well. It was snug and I'm lowered 3/5 so I ended up crawling out the window because the wheel wells on the trailer wouldn't let the doors open up enough to get out the old fashioned way, but it fit. No rub or ding problems as shown above with the 65 either. Come to think of it, I think there may be two sizes of auto transport and I had to make sure to reserve the larger one. You might want to check that out...it's starting to come back to me.
It was also a pleasure pulling this dude 20 hrs straight thru with my F250 TurboDiesel. Barely broke a sweat going up the hills, it was pretty impressive but I'll leave that for another board... |

Re: Hauling your truck
I got the only transport they had and its lowered 4-6 and I think the 60s era is a little wider in thhe lower section of the body then 67-72 but not +. I towed mine with a 96 1500 2wd dodge ram from Mooresville to kansas and it was fun in the hills... Need more gear in the half ton for sure.

Re: Hauling your truck
how did you get them to let you do that? The trailer alone is 2000 pounds, and they won't let you pull one unless you have a one ton most of the time.

Re: Hauling your truck
I've tried renting there wagons a few times, and they always tell me to go away, that it's too heavy. They even tried tellin me my one ton is a 1/2 ton.
"They didn't make SRW one tons trucks back then." Whatever. I saved a bunch of money and bought my own tow bar...screw u-haul. most of there stuff is garbage anyways. |

Re: Hauling your truck
I've used uhaul trailers a few times, and have never had an issue. I've been towing long enough that I know exactly what my tow vehicle can and can't handle (don't ask about the latter ), so i play their little game and say i am towing an 80's chevette.
I pulled my 72 longbed (3-4" lowered), from Hesperia CA, to Mason City IA, last summer with no problem on a U-haul Flat bed. Then in October I used a U-haul dolly to pull it from Iowa to my home in MN. Now that was an experience. my buddy slid on some ice while leaving a parking lot, and ended up jack-knifing the dolly, which caused the trailer fender to smash to pieces as it went underneath the 72. but I paid them $30 for a new fender and all is good.

Re: Hauling your truck
Mine is lowered 3/5 as well so I also had to do the duke boy getting into there. Hopefully mine doesn't bounce around and screw up the door and rockers like in a previous pic!! I'm pulling mine with a 05 Ram 2500 HD with the Cummins. I have the Edge Attitude power programmer installed so I am very anxious to see what I can get for mileage wise out of it and also what effect those Eastern TN Mnts will have on it. I've gotten 23 MPG before with that programmer before so wish me luck!!

Re: Hauling your truck
good luck on you trip....hope it dont rain...your dodge will have no trouble puling it...haveing to duke bo it in an out because you cant open the doors,,so this means your going across country with your windos down...with my luck, it would be the first monsoon ever recorded in the usa, and it would cover my entire route..

Re: Hauling your truck
I just picked up a 68 shortbed last night and towed it home with a uhaul dolly.
I pulled it with my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is lifted 6" with 33" tires, 4.56 gears, and inline 6. Luckily the tow dolly's don't put much weight on the tung. I took it out of OD and putted home at about 50....not much power for pulling with a 6 banger. Oh, I told them I was pulling an 87 Subaru They look similar right? |

Re: Hauling your truck
About a week ago my son learned a lesson about hauling a pickup on a trailer using a SWB pickup and not loading the other pickup far enough on the trailer. He has his own flatbed trailer.
He thought since his 70 Chey SWB pickup had a fresh 454 with some mods it would do the job ok. His truck is lowered somewhat and he had put air shocks and the optional overload springs on it. His truck had more than enough power but when he tried to get up to highway speeds he almost lost control of his truck and trailer. His trailer was tounge light because he had a tool box on the front of the trailer and had not pulled the hauled pickup all the way forward. Since the trailer was tounge light it started fish-tailing and this with the combination of the SWB truck the whole setup started jumping around. He said it took all he could do to bring the setup under control in two lanes of a 4 lane highway. Sorry if this a little off subject, but just wanted to share with you all what can happen if a person is not careful. Danny - Southeast Missouri |

Re: Hauling your truck
as far as leaving the windows down... there is no need for that at all.
climb out the window, reach in and roll it up as far as you can, then, reach in through the wing vent and roll it up the rest of the way, then flip the wing vent shut. It won't latch, so when you get done towing it, you pop it open, reach in and roll down the window. If your drivers side window regulator is junk, then crawl out the passenger side. |

Re: Hauling your truck
used a uhaul but it had stock tires.... FYI if you are renting from them be sure to check their website and see that you hauler truck and towed truck meet their criteria, if not then you have to tell them that you are hauling a chevette.... My buddy was using his jeep cherokee for a mustang (gutted) and they wouldn't rent to him.... some trailers have fenders that fold down too....

Re: Hauling your truck
Pulled mine home from Arizona, on the same trailer as msgross. In fact it was that picture that let me know it could be done on that trailer. Had to put it into 4wheel drive to get it up the ramps because of loose gravel and bald tires. Pulled real smooth at all speeds behind the Tahoe.
