Re: What shocks for bagged truck??

i'll be running stock replacement shocks for a nissan frontier.....they are perfect for slamming your truck, and have 13in of travel for when you wanna raise your truck up all the way.

Re: What shocks for bagged truck??

I used stock Gabriel HD gas shocks on the back of my 68 when it was on the road before (rear bags only). Now that I've updated everything (& added front bags), I'm using Bilsteins.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Many of our trucks utilize different set-ups so the shocks will have different requirements.

I use direct replacement Bilsteins for the stock shocks up front & built my shock brackets to center the shock @ ride height.

I used direct replacement Bilsteins for lowered 88~98 GM trucks in back. I fabricated a new upper shock bracket to mount them & also relocated the upper shock crossmember for proper shock travel @ ride height.

No.... not all are the 'same'. They might be intended for the same application, but the lengths can vary as much as 2" between shock manufacturers. When I was researching options, I found that most shocks that will compress enough for 'airing-out' the suspension are going to be pretty short. Usually when their pretty short, they don't offer much extension.

I'm not saying it's not possible, but I cant imagine a shock having 16" of travel working in this type of application (uses close to stock or stock brackets/bracket locations). If I had the extended & compressed specs, as well as vehicle height (= shock length) @ ride height, the math would help explain.

My front shocks (Bilsteins) are 15.5" extended; 10.5" fully compressed & are the correct front shock for 67-87's per their catalog. The Monroes I got from ART w/my a-arms were 14/10 & I'm not sure if they're for the 67-87 trucks.

I figure optimum ride height is exactly the middle of shock travel which would be (for my example) 13"(Bils) or 12"(Monroes). That would allow for 2-2.5" or so of compression & extension or 5" total travel. 1" makes a big difference when trying to keep the shock from bottoming out within the limitations of the lower control arm & the shock mount on the frame. This is why I modified the shock mounts on both ends (ART a-arm lower & the upper frame mount).

Why? If they're set-up properly w/the correct travel, they should live a normal service life.

no shock is designed to be push almost to its limit, held, pushed or pulled to opposite limit, held, etc.

On all the bagged cars we have all run on monroes and we get about a 6xxx miles....and yes the shock are setup "right" so that they dont over extend or collasps.

Re: What shocks for bagged truck??

and if your system is quick you can forget about keeping shocks for long, the valves go out in them fairly fast.

Sounds like we've designed our systems differently.
