slotted mags ID???
Anyone have a clue as to who made these slotted mags? Just got a set of 4 that are 15X7 6lug that just need a little polishing to be super. Any idea of what a set might be worth before I decide to keep or sell???

They all look the same to me. Some of em have stampings, but I'm sure you already checked for that. Thats a nice size, I usually see em in 8's or 10's. Do you have caps and lug nuts for em?

They look like American Racing ones I had.I had two sets in the late`80s.I think they were the last ones available.

most likely an early "American" set..
The most collectible of that style was the "Shelby Cal-500", which was an actual magnesium wheel (100%), thus the name "Mags". American, Cragar, and several importers made them, however most were aluminum or some mixture of alunimum with magnesium. Back side will tell you alot more about them though.. Cragars will be marked with a CM usually in the casting.. American's had the more dominant "3 hole" cap early on, moving to the captive cap with the "A". Cragars and Shelby's are commonly 4 hole caps. The correct Shelby caps will have a cobra on them and are a little more difficult to find. Shelbys are also able to be spot by the way they are machined, and they were the only ones with a groove near the top of the bead on the rim.

typicaly $100-200 for a common size like 15x7/8 a set
ive seen 10s and 4s go for 200 a pair a few acttual halibrand all mag rims where asking 1500 a pair!!!!!! |

halibrands dont have that recess around the center , they are typically held to the wheel by the center cap

I have 1 pair of 8 lug Shelby 500's(looking for a matching pair BTW). mdillon was just out to my place last week and he has a set that looked just like that for his Wagoneer. I never knew it before, but same 6 lug pattern, same 7/16 studs.

The only Halibrands I can think of had smaller/shorter holes with a slight ridge around the slots.Many slot wheels had more squared corners than the Americans,like the Jeep wheels.Many had the air valve in the rim and not in the slot like the Americans.These have the step in the rim and center like Americans.The 8-lugs that I`m most familiar with had differences from the 15" wheels due to heavier application and larger diameter.The step in the rim is more pronounces and the slots are closer to the rim.Here are some Americans in 8-lug:
Here are some that are not Americans: Halibrand These were called "dish mags" before we started calling them "slots".The name "mag" was a reference to all early racing wheels made of magneseum,but mostly the 5 spoke design was considered a mag.The others used another word to identify them,like "dish".

OK back to my 6 lug's----I have found some lettering which say FORGED and they appear to be individually serial numbered with a unique number for each wheel. The more I look at them, the more I kind of like the look so perhaps there is a way to firure out who made them, then find a source for center caps, and finally, what is the best way to clean them up???
There are plenty of light scratches and curb rubs but nothing really nasty. I think they will go nicely my my 68 SWB project truck and I like staying with 15" as tires are a whole lot cheaper then 16-17" etc. |

i fyou lived closer to me,,id buy them in a heart beat..i can never find these style fo rim..imo, the best looking rim ever made..would love to find another set for my 68...the sixe you got for the front,,and as deep as possible for the rear..

I was just showing that I had a clue.I cleaned a set with Mother`s polish and the cames out nice.If they`re not coated and have alot of black spots,you can use etching wheel cleaner.I`ve used Eagle One with 000 steel wool,then polish.

I have the same wheels on my 70 GMC, I dont see a brand on them anywhere. My bet is American or maybe Ansen.
Used to be you could not give away an old set of slots, Now with the retro look in they usually go for a couple hundred bucks at swap meet. Id like to find a 8 bolt set for my 3/4 ton project

they look like the Ansen Sprint model A69 from American Racing. I think These are what will wind up on my blazer. a brand new set, polished, painted, or brushed runs $638 from pep boys (cheaper online.) they also make them up to 17x8s. those run about $700 a set.

Thanks everyone for their knowledge and input. I think I now know enough to be dangerous!! Will get stuff to clean them up and polish them to a bright luster----then will need to make a decision on tires. Will stay close to stock but perhaps just a wee bit bigger for kicks. Huck

I can't help identify your wheels but mine are ansen sprints and the bolt circle area is raised on mine rather than dished in like yours are.

I would bet money on those being factory wheels to the late 70's/early 80's jeep wagoneer. They only came in 15x7 factory for the jeep and they had that three screw center cap design.

Hey Huck, let me know how you make out on the polishing, I think I have to do some sanding be for polishing. Deep stone dings! I just bought a flapper wheel to try out...
Bought a set of 5-15x10 for 500. Most I can read is made in Van Nuys Cali. I was thinking Ansen but don't know yet, valve stem is in the slot

They look to be Ansen Sprints,since the center is an outty.American and Ansen became one at some point,I don`t know how far back.They are nearly identicle.

I used fine scotch brite pads from my local auto paint store then some Mothers. I was not going for the polished look...I like a softer satin finish like the original wheels...and yes...I know some of the originals were polished.
Before and after shots...only about 30 minutes per wheel.
