GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
i got a 72 GMC and ive had couriour bearing issues. so when i dropped the drive shaft the center bearing support ( the bracket where the couriour bearing bolts to) is broken, its been welded in the past. so i go to the local salvage yard to get the piece and out of the 12 67-72 there is no GMCs so i looked the chevys over and seen its different the chevy has a strait 2 bolt bearing and my GMCs is horse shoe shaped, so if i can find one for a GMC, then imm gonna have to get a chevy one and weld it in, so will i have to change the drive shaft too?
please help i wanna drive my baby again. |

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
I honestly don't thing there's a difference between the chevy and the gmc. Post a pic of what your bearing looks like and I'll tell you if it's the same as mine (my truck is a gmc).

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
i personally know theres a difference in the support bearings, i work for oreillys and there are 2 different ones, the chevy ones look like a tin circle with a stem, and the gmc ones look like a horseshoe

Not much help here but; the carquest book say's the one for my 71 C 10 has the side to side bolt pattern (horse shoe) NOT. Mine requires the inline bolt pattern which I finally found at GMC Paul's.

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
Just for reference, here's the other frame bracket. This is the only one I have seen on the pickups I have owned. 68 and 69 Chevy and 72 GMC.

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
I removed this bracket competely and replaced it with a one piece drive shaft. I've had no problems, but my '72 GMC is a short step. May not be as convenient for your version.

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
My GMC has the Chevy one, are you sure it's a GMC/Chevy thing and not a leaf spring/coil spring thing? My GMC has coil springs.

How do you take off the bearing? Mine is shot and I don't see how the shaft comes out?

Re: GMC people i need drive shaft help!!!
Mine came off on it's own. Which is not a good thing By the way.
My 70 is a one-piece shaft, so I don't have to mess with it.
