My bone stock 72 is orange, my grandfather's 72 is orange.

I wonder if the color had to do with the plant of manufacture of the engine or truck as someone mentioned.

Or maybe red paint denotes a "high nickel content block" or something cool like that --

I don't know who this truck belongs to but did an original restoration and that is why I saved the pics. It also shows accessory colors.

looks terrible, nothing to me looks worse then looking under the hood of some georgious ride and its has a bright orange powerplant. it just erks me. since i was little going to carshows an being around older cars ive always hated that orange...ehhh.. mines black , great contrast with any chrome or aluinium parts that bolt onto it. just my 2cents. good luck. w.

Thank goodness I don't have to paint my Jimmy engine blue, it would ruin the colors I 'm trying to pick up in the drapes and tableclothe. Alpine green will do nicely, matches great with Dark olive....J.

The L6 292 was originally Alpine Green when it first came out with the '63 model year. I think 250s + 230s were light blue. In '67 all L6s were produced with Chevy Engine Orange, just like the V8s. My original engine in my '68 C/10 stepside was Chevy Engine Orange, a darker, redder color than the RPO516 "Omaha Orange" the body was painted. I prefer the Chevy Engine Orange for engines, myself.

Your 383 isnt stock or origional so really you can have any color you want. I know you did say stock appearing, so I would go with orange. Its what most people are used to seeing. I like either orange or black myself. Black hides small oil leaks better on daily drivers but you cant go wrong with orange...
