hot starts, starter solenoid

Aye how many of you are running starter heat shields...also anyone have the hot start issue even after using the shield?

yea, I've got the same problem with my 64. It has a 350 out of a 75 1/2 ton with black-jack headers that are only about 1/4" from the starter. I haven't tried a heat shield yet just because it probably wouldn't fit anyway in that small space.

yah Im thinking of maybe getting some heat retardant material and just hose clamping it to the starter itself...what you guys think about that?

This is one of those "famous" chevy problems. Caused by - the facts that the chevy starter solenoid is both a solenoid bor the bedix mechanism as well as a starter relay, combined with it being so close to all that heat!! An old fix that some of us used to do was to jumper the relay teminal down at the starter and then use a ford type relay remotely mounted on the firewall. I know its not a complete fix but it does limit the heat problem only to the solenoid part of the solenoid. The copper disc inside the end of the solenoid is the relay part that gets trashed by the heat. I hope this helps!

Make sure all the wires going to starter are new and heavy gauge, half the time the wires are shot(heat soaked) and the starter isn't getting any signal to start. I use a heavy 0 gauge positive wire from the battery also. Along with a high quality starter it hasn't let me down using this system.
