GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Has anybody tried using this Big Block serpentine setup from GM Performance Parts in their 67-72 (GMPP #12498733)? I'm in the process of putting in a 502 crate motor in my 72 suburban (with dual A/C) and was thinking this may be easier than trying to scrounge up all the brackets, pulleys, etc. for a big block. Maybe even cheaper at the end of the day!
I'm kinda wondering if it'll be difficult to adapt the a/c compressor and the alternator. Probably have to use R134? I'm pretty sure I can get the power steering pump to work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
The only thing better would be if GM made that set-up for a short water pump

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
I put this set up on my zz4. It was very easy. The a/c lines will work, the power steering pump will need a cutom line made at local parts house cost me 35.00. other than that peice of cake. Looks clean and no more belt adjusting!

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
I have it on my 402 in my jeep...
I switched out my steering box to use a later model Chevy box. Was easy, this is the incorrect belt routing... Last edited by FormerMember; 10-04-2007 at 06:32 PM. |

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Watch the clearance for your radiator, the water pump pulley is super close with a long pump and the motor in the stock location. I kept my short water pump because of it.

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
I put it on my 502 with the factory kit(pump, alt, pwrsteering pump, compressor). Biggest issue I am still working on is the clearance issue to the rad no room for a clutch fan and no room for electric fans. Right now I have a 12" and a 14" electric in front of the air conditioner coils and a 16" flex fan(no room for anything bigger) on a 2" extender. I am trying to make up a fan shroud to funnel the air better to the flex fan.
I just swapped the valve on the new pump with the old pump and all of the hoses to power steering worked.

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Well.. it's about half the price of the same getup from Vintage Air --
http://www.hotrodsusa.com/store/frontrunner.html At $900 to $1700 for these setups .. I think I'll scrounge on my budget but I can certainly appreciate why someone with deeper pockets for their project might go this way.

Kfreddy, I Noticed You Used Newer Motor Mounts, What Type Of Exhaust Manifolds Or Headers Did You Use. Looks Like It Was A Tight Fit.

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
I'm putting this on 4x4. It looks like you guys with tight fan/radiator clearance have 2wd. Doesn't the 4x4 engine crossmember sit farther back (2inches or so??) towards the firewall. So maybe no clearance issue on a 4x4??
Thanks guys. |

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Cant they dont make a reverse flow short pump, serpantine setups run the pump on the backside of the belt so it spins backward, plus why would you want a short anyway limited water flow, if you coming into this century with the serpantine why not use a pump from thios century, chevy stopped using them in the 70's for a reason

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Where did you find a reverse flow short pump and how did that work since they pulley wouldn't line up with the others

Re: GM Perf. Parts Serpentine setup
Not "reverse flow" but "reverse rotation". The flow is the same direction as any old Chevy. Just to clear thing up.

Still do they make a special pulley for short pumps? why would you want it due to limited flow capabilities? do they make a "reverse rotation" short style pump? again why why why? If your not going with a concours build why run the short pump and serpantine would be out of the question anyway
