I have been visiting the site for a while and have noticed a lot of nice blazers on here. I have a 72 Blazer (Yes, I will post pictures later). I have some plans for it and need some advice. I plan on swapping my Turbo 350 for a 700R4 and possibly a 454 BB. No, I will not use this truck for mud. I am building only as recreational purposes only. What do you all think.

Welcome from Seattle.

Stuffing the 454 can get tricky. The BBs tend to have firewall clearance issues, but with some effort and massaging of the firewall you can get it to fit.

Are you going to run a lift? What size tires. Post pics when you get a chance.

Re: New/Old member

Hey All,

also brandnew to this sight. Have a 71 CST Blazer that I just swapped from a TH350 to a 700. Here are the problems I ran into:

700 is about 2" longer than the 350. This means you will have to either make a custom linkage for your T-Case shifter or hog-out some sheet metal (the former takes some time but is well worth it). This will also effect your driveline lengths, the rear driveshaft may be too short, the front will not be long enough AND you won't be able to use a the stock double cardon as the pan on the 700 creates some clearance issues. Plan on spending a few bucks for the unexpected. Finally, be sure to overbuild the tranny like crazy!!! I've been through two so far that were supposed to be able to handle a measley 350 ponies and my third is on it's way out (all from different builders, is it possible to have that much bad luck?!). I love the low first but my next swap will definately be a 4L80.

Re: New/Old member

if you are about to blow #3 on a 350 horse engine, you got something not right. How are you adjusting the TV cable? If you are just doing the old pull and click, I'm willin to bet the farm it isn't set right.
Do a search on here for bow tie overdrives, and you'll get LOTSA info. Or just go to there site.

Re: New/Old member

Here's where I have to eat some humble pie. First tranny was a bad build and lasted 50 miles; had a cross leak between 1st gear and low reverse valving. Second tranny was rebuilt for the power but I installed, I tried the pull click method on the TV cable but I'm guessing that somewhere between my heavy foot, 35" tires and no auxiliary tranny cooler I simply cooked it. It lasted about a year 7-8k most of that was pretty hard-core wheelin in the desert washes of AZ. This last one was tested, installed and retested by a pretty reputable builder. He had me bring it back a couple of times to readjust the TV cable... It's been a couple of years now and it's not gone yet but getting those tell-tale signs.

I'll have one more opportunity to do it right as I currently have the motor yanked out for a stroked TPI 383. Will keep ya'll posted on how that goes.
