Tranny leak?
Why does my auto 350 tranny leak from the kick down cable after sitting for more than 24 hours? It leaks from where the cable bolts to the case. Is there a gasket that goes here, maybe a o-ring gasket? Its fine for the first 24 hours then it leaks like a sieve. I am starting it up every day for right now.
Aaron

Re: Tranny leak?
When a vehicle sets, the flued will start draining back into the pan from different areas causing the fluid to rise. Most likely you have a bad o-ring on the cable housing allowing it to leak. Not a hard fix, disconect the cable from the carb, remove the bolt holding the cable housing to the tranny and pull up on the housing. The inner cable is on an "s" hook so you'll have to work it off the wire. Replace the o-ring and re-assemble.

Re: Tranny leak?
I took it apart as you said and I didn't see a groove for an o-ring or any o-ring for that matter. I wrapped it up with some teflon tape and put it back together. I hope this will clear it up.
It's a rebuilt tranny so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get put back together right. Aaron

Re: Tranny leak?
longhorn - you must be a transplant. I am looking good so far. We will see after the magical 24 hour period.
I actually have the same problem with a 400 in my Sub but I haven't investigated it to far because its currently inop. I took the 307 out to put in my Jimmy which has the 350 problem tranny.

Re: Tranny leak?
You may have a later type detent cable that doesn't use an o-ring but instead uses "top hat" type seal. When you pulled the housing and it was straight on the end with no groove for the o-ring it is the top hat style.

Re: Tranny leak?
Top hat seal sounds like a winner. The teflon tape stopped most of the leak so I pulled it apart one more time and wrapped more around it. I think this will solve the problem until I get the proper seal. I do think this is a newer type cable as it doesn't look like the normal 70's and 80's style I have seen many times before. I wonder if a parts store would carry one of these 'top hat' style seals. Anybody have a pic of the seal by chance? (I know its a stretch)

Re: Tranny leak?
Well the teflon tape ended up working great. I thought that I had a line on the gasket but it turned out to be for the dipstick.

Re: Tranny leak?
Thanks for the update. I hope to fix mine sometime next week. I am worried if I pull the screw off and pull out the line that I may loose the rest back into it when I undo the s hook part. Wish me luck.

Hi Long Roof!
Quote: (I took it apart as you said and I didn't see a groove for an o-ring or any o-ring for that matter. I wrapped it up with some teflon tape and put it back together. Now my leak is in the back from the rear seal O-Ring. I am going to change it here soon. The rear leak is mild compared to the leak that was at the passing gear line and were it entered the trans. The teflon ideal was a great ideal.

Re: Tranny leak?
Yea leaks are like the plague. I have a dana 44 leak and a very slow leak from the transfer case.
I had to put the teflon on a little thicker to make it completely stop. I also found out from the process that the bolt holding the cable in was bottoming out on the case so I added another couple washers. All is good now. Hope the rear seal is an easy fix for ya. Aaron

Re: Tranny leak?
Take care not to over tighten it. O ring type, over tight crimps o ring and the you need a new one. My rule is don't over tighten either style!
esll.

Re: Tranny leak?
Thanks Fellas!!!! I will make sure to not overtighten anywhere on this thing. It is nice not to have fluid all over the place.
Putting that teflon on was a chore of sorts. I am glad you shared your ideal.
