summit gas tank install question
I am going to move my rear crossmember back a couple inches on my 55 chevy truck so the tank will sit in nicely.
My question is this...the rear crossmember shares a couple rivits with the bottom of the rear leaf spring shackle mount. Can i just relieve the pressure off the leafs, grind out he rivits, replace the rivits on the rear leaf with grade 8 bolts/nuts and call it good? seems like it would be fine to me but I am just making sure.

Re: summit gas tank install question
Hey
I just cut the rivets out with the grinder and replaced with the bolts. I didn't worry about the springs. Nothing seemed to move. Setting the tank up this way also help the filler hole clear one of the under bed cross members also. Brian ... ![]()

Re: summit gas tank install question
i just put mine in today , i moved the Xmember back so that the front holes in it lined up w/the rear holes in the shackel mount , that way it gives you a perfect sized opening.

Re: summit gas tank install question
that is important for me. I HATE drilling. I have had the drill grab as it goes through and vroom it is out of my hand. scares the snot out of me.

Re: summit gas tank install question
I did a similarmod to my 54 but left the spring mounts as they were and boxed in the frame about 8 inches in that area so the structural integrity would not be affected.
Later I ended up boxing in the entire frame since I had the material and time. The crossmember ties in the spring mounts to the frame so something should be done to strengthen them if you move the crossmember. |
