"71" Gmc 6500 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I looked at a "71" GMC 6500 and on the glove box, GMC was one of the options. Whats that about? The door VIN tag is GMC, the grill is GMC bolted over a chevy type grill that was cut out. How about some big truck front pictures.

There's a good reason for that, and since you asked, here goes: In 1966, GMC came out with a new line of medium and heavy trucks:

The E series was the GMC medium duty model. This truck was not the same as the Chevy C-40/50/60 medium truck, as you can see here:

The GMC E series was made from '67 to '69, and in '70, it was replaced by the GMC C-4500/5500/6500, which as you probably guessed was the Chevy C-40/50/60 with different emblems. Since both of these Chevy and GMC C series medium duty trucks were built on the same assembly line (Flint, I think), GMC nameplates were technically an option, as you see on that SPID label. Now, the question is why did GM do this. I am really not 100% sure, but I think it had to do with the fact that the E series was built in GMC's Pontiac plant. The Pontiac plant built all of the GMC medium and heavy trucks, and in 1970, Chevy started selling their own versions of those trucks (the Titan 90's). GMC may have needed more plant space at Pontiac to supply Chevy, so they dropped their own medium duty models and started selling the Chevy's.

It`s a 26' rollback with a rear lift axle, 52000lbs GVW. Motor 427ci, transmission 5 speed I think Spicer, rear 2 speed 6.17/8.17. It runs and drives alright the body is a little rought for what they want for it.

If you still need a pic, here is the front of my 69 Chev C 80. As Bob B commented, this may be a model that was 'covered" with a GMC label starting in 1970, although it is bigger/heavier than the C040/50/60 type. It does have the 5 speed Spicer and 2 speed rear - with the 478 Cu In V6.

That truck is one of the GMC's that was rebadged as a Chevy. The Chevy 80 series was really a GMC HM-8500 heavy truck. If it has a V-6, it is just about certain it was built by GMC.

The GMC Brigadier was the Chevy Bruin, the GMC Astro 95 was the Chevy Titan 90, and the GMC General was the Chevy Bison. Yes, the Brigadier/Bruin was the later version of the truck in the picture. Very similar truck except the Brigadier/Bruin usually had a fiberglass tilt hood.
