Sway bar ?
hey I got a sway bar off a 71 C20 and I was wondering if this is the biggiest one you can get . I think the size is 1 1/16 sound right? trying to get the right size for new bushings from energy susp . also is anyone using the lowered sway bar bracket from early classic?

The stock one is pretty small. If you want a bigger one, get one off a 3/4 ton 73-up truck,it will bolt right on. When I lowered my 71 I mounted the sway bar directly to the frame.with no brakets except the ones that go around the bushing.

supposedly the 3/4 ton burbs had even larger ones, but i had an 85 one and it had the 1 1/16" one also, i would look for 1 ton trucks of later years up to 87 and see. I think the largest there would be wouldd be 1 1/4", if evne that much.

My 3/4 ton front bar is 1 1/8, and the swapped-in bar on the ramptruck is the 1 1/4" 1 ton bar. I used greasable polyurethane for the frame bushings, but have to use the factory rubber for the A-arm because the poly can't handle the swivelling and gets spit out, in my experience.

I picked up a 1 1/16" bar off a 75 Chevy at a wrecker for $20 bucks. Totally different handling truck. Best $20 bucks I ever spent.

So whats the normal for a 1/2 ton sway bar? i tried to get a bushing set from autoparts store and they said there were 4 different ones for our style trucks? Gotta have the right dia. i guess.....

I'm using the Chevy 1 1/16 bar with Polygraphite greasable bushings and lowered mounting brackets from Early Classic. Nice parts and powder coated. Fit perfectly but you have to remove the lower rivet in the front spreader crossmember if your truck was not factory sway bar equiped. The lowered brackets keep things up out of harms way while maintaining the proper angle to the contol arm brackets. One more thing. The former GM at Guldstrand Motorsports, The Corvette suspension people, told me to use marine grease on the poly bushings. It won't wash away and will keep them from squeeking. A correct 1/2 ton sway bar for our trucks is 1", the 3/4 ton is 1-1/16th".

Thanks i will order the lowered swaybar bracket soon it will end up costing 50 or 60 bucks bye the time it gets here CAnadian FUNDS SUCK the exchange rate sucks !!!!!

I'm getting ready to install a sway bar in my dropped truck too. Should I opt for the $25 at the wrecking yard, or buy one from classic performance for $150 with the urethane bushings and all? And are rear-sway bars actually necessary? Thanks

If you go the early classic route, you will
get a 1-1/4" bar with energy suspension poly bushings, the bar comes powdercoated as well. I got one of these kits, mainly because it included all I needed. It even came with original GM brackets where for the frame to sway bar mount goes. Overall opinion: great...but expensive. It comes with EVERYTHING...but that comes with a price. I am happy with mine and it improved the handling tremendously, but my truck didnt have a sway bar to begin with. Hey, that is why I logged on tonight, I was going to post the question if anyone had a rear sway bar, where they got it, how they mounted it, and if it made a noticeable difference. Also, if you just have like 2 inch lowering springs, do you need to get the sway bar relocator thing from early classics?

I got a 1-1/4 inch sway bar from an '84 dually. There were a couple other duallies in that junkyard with that same size swaybar, so you might want to keep an eye open for a dually if you want that size.
