Flywheel dust cover manual trans
Hey folks. I am in the process of building a motor for my 72 Cheyenne Super shortbed 4X4. It has the sm465 and is missing the flywheel dust cover. I have searched everywhere including the archives on this board and the consensus seems to be that no one makes them anymore and you can't find them.
Am I accurate on this? If so, has anyone tried to fabricate one and been successful at it? Are there other covers that are close enough you can adapt them and make them work? It has been open since I bought the truck a year ago and with the engine built and a new clutch in there, I really want to close it up. Especially with winter coming. Thanks for any help you can provide. |

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
I would say this. If you cant find one...make a cardboard template of the cover. then cut one out of tin...and that would be the way I would go.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
you could start looking in junk yards, otherwise I might have one laying around. I would have to look.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
Maybe someone has one off their truck right now that could make a template for you. It will be easy to duplicate if you have a template.

I got one out waiting to go in that I could take a look at and see if I could make a template.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
In one of the threads I asked the same question and I believe someone mentioned finding a chrome one. Not sure what vendor.
I'll do some looking. |

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
I seen them all around in junkyards off SM465s..I guess I better start pulling them off..I do have enough of them for my 4spd trucks and extra transmissions I've got though.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
It doesn't look like the template thing will work. Allthough one is a flat piece about 18" long and 5" wide the other piece is like a quarter sphere. Dish. See "WorkingLonghorn" 's pic.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
Yes workinlonghorn, that is the piece. I knew a template would be tough because of the dish.
Does anyone know what years they used the same dust cover? That would help me as I start the junkyard search. Thanks. |

I just bought a set from the parts board. Our vendors have them. I first posted a WTB, and it all work out from there real fast.

No link. I could go back and find out, but he was just parting out some stuff. Several were available though.

Here is a vendor who might part this truck out with a 4-speed. Might have a cover. PM the vendor, and see if he has a cover. He parts stuff out, and may help you.

i found one from an online vendor for my 69 1/2 ton. I think it might have been Brothers or chevy duty. I'll try to find out.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
I called a number of vendors and no one carries it. ChevyDuty's website is not working anymore. Does anyone know how to get hold of them? It has been years since I have ordered from them. I am going to post a wtb on the classifieds and hopefully get lucky. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Re: Flywheel dust cover manual trans
Glad to help, CheyLadd. I looked for one a couple of months ago and never found one.
Then I found a new one while cleaning out some boxes in my garage. I had ordered it from the Chevy dealer locally about 10 years ago and had forgotten about it. |
