The metal I was cutting was at that level. Yeah remember kids.... wear a cup when doing such a task. It will make you happier in the end.

I guess I would be in the running for the DAOTM award. Luckily I did not hurt a 67-72 Chevy truck or myself.
I live on a small farm and have always wanted a dump truck, so earlier this month I bought a '77 GMC dump truck before checking into getting insurance and such. I have tried a lot of places to get insurance so I can drive it to go to the quarry 20 miles away, but have not found anyone that will insure it without paying a sh-t load of money. State Farm will insure it if I switch from my present insurance company to them, but since I have less expensive insurance I hesitate to do it. All I really needed was about 5 loads of gravel and maybe in the future my brothers will need quite a bit for their farms. I told my wife the other day I may have bought a "Yard Ornament" instead of a dump truck. Danny - Southeast Missouri |

[/QUOTE] You were lucky. Grinding wheels, cutting wheels, whatever it may be.....call for a "Ring Check" at some point. If it don't ring (as I understand it) it will be because there is a crack and it will come apart. When it comes apart is the question. I say that because I worked in a place that produced valves for the oil pipelines. We had to grind out a portion of each side of the valve so the cutting equipment would be able to enter the body of the valve. The shop had a 4500RPM die grinder (air powered) and used the old grinding wheels from bench grinders. Those wheels were worn down to less than 5-inches in diameter. I asked my supervisor if anyone ever did a ring check on them. He told me, "No. Those wheels don't blow up!" Two weeks later, a woman working in out "Grind Shack" had one to disintegrate while the wheel was on the back side of the valve body. The concrete block walls of the grind shack looked like someone took a M-60 and shot it up. It coulda killed her. I think they thought I had something to do with it, but I didn't. I only knew to ask the question about a ring check. For your safety, it doen't matter if it's on a portable device or on a bench grinder. Check the wheels to be sure they are safe to use. Oh, don't use them without guards, either. The situation I cited was on an unguarded tool.
