in need of your expertise
Hello all, new to the game. Love these trucks. Went and looked at a 1970 C20. Looks pretty nice, owner had rocker panels and cab corners replaced. Also the truck was repainted in 1990. The lines of the body do not seem to line up though, not sure if this was because of the person that did the body work or not. Truck is basically garaged every winter and has not been drove for the past 4 years. It has 109,000 on it. Owners looking to get around 3,500.00 for it. Needs new shocks, probably a new starter, and it seems like one of the rear brakes stick. The Vin Is CE240J103041. Model CE20934 - Some of the items off the glove box that i could read. A/C - E81 pick up box - 6s0 HD rear spring - J70 brake booster equip - 3 spd auto - heavy duty battery - radio - red custom clth trm - tinted glass - rv mirrors - front stabilizer - aux spring eq - 350 cu in engine - power steering - camper wire - painted rear bumper - am meter oil gauge. The truck seems pretty clean for being in minnesota, not an expert though. Does this seam like a reasonable deal ? Any advise or comments would be great. thanks

Re: in need of your expertise
That would be sorta high around here(calif.).I don't know what the market is like there. Why hasn't it been driven for 4 years? Did you drive it or start it? For 3500 I would want a good thorough test drive and it better have good power,no smoke,no weird drive-line noises, etc.

Re: in need of your expertise
First off "WELCONE" to the best resource for these trucks in the entire world(maybe the universe,I'm not sure,I don't get out much).
The body lines may not match for several reasons.First you are looking at a nearly 40 year old truck and tolerances were not as good as they are today. Also the cab mounts or bushings or the core support or bushings could be bad, worn rusty or nearly missing.Crawl under the truck and look.Bed mounts could be the same. The price seems reasonable because the truck does look to be in good shape. There are lots of posts in the FAQ's area of this site and they can help you learn more about trouble spots and what to look for and where. The best advice is to educate yourself and figure out if you can repair what needs repair or if you want/can have it done within the budget you have. Good luck and let us know. BTW if you get it pics are required.

Re: in need of your expertise
Thanks for the response. Have not drove the truck, but he did start it up. Makes a harsh noise when first starting, im not a mechanic, but I thinks its probably the starter. Its kind of a quick grinding noise and then it seems to be fine. This is the 2nd owner of the truck, hes had it since 1974. Used it for hunting and fishing trips. Brought it out for fishing opener, then went back in the garage after deer hunting in november so it missed the harshness of winter for the most part. Need to go back and take if for a drive yet.

It looks pretty nice and if it is OK on the road it might be a good buy. Take a freind/mechanic along next time. Check out if the registration is up to date and if not,how much it will cost.

Re: in need of your expertise
as for your body panel alignment question it is probably a combination of the truck itself and who did the bodywork , the body panels on these truck's DON'T LINE UP ,,,,,,,,,,,,THEY NEVER DID !!! you have to make them line up , as time go's on people see truck's that have been fixed by someone that knows what they are doing and get everything to fit and then they compare other truck's to those which isn't fair but that's life , I would worry more about rust than panel fit on a truck I was thinking about buying , good luck with the truck .

Re: in need of your expertise
In the one photo given, it doesn't look bad. $3500 sounds about right for this area, but, IMO, they are ALL over priced here in the rust belt. Welcome to the best source of info on these trucks, and the best bunch of ppl you'll meet! WorkinLonghorn, I think Cali is the only place that will charge a road tax on a vehicle that wasn't on the road. (back registration fees) |
