"Dually" Noted

Just finished my big block install and am ready to start working on the dually conversion, would like to hear from anyone thats already done one ,or has one and can pass on some pearls of wisdom....I've measued axels from 44" to 59" backing plate to backing plate, any prefs on the width? What is the general gear ratio's on the dually's? And how expensive is it to change the ratio? What about fenders? Have had thoughts about using step side fenders and trim them to fit, or using a late model dually bed, any prefs?

Thanks toomanytoyz! The rearend I'm using is out of a '97 C3500, and it measures 90" from outside to outside. I'll measure from backing plate to backing plate for you tomorrow. I'm running 4.10's in mine, and I am going with a 6.5L Turbo Diesel. Making the fenders was much easier than I thought they would be. Feel free to PM with any questions or concerns about doing them. I bought a set of bigger, wider tires for it today. I'm hoping it will bring the outside of the dual tires closer to the wheelwell. If not, I'm probably going to shave about an inch off of the stepside fenders. I'll keep you posted on that. I'm still also trying to decide if I want to droip the rear or raise the front to even out the stance.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I went out today and measured the rearend for you. It is 58" plate to plate. If you are happy with your current ratio, there are companys out there that sell dual rear wheel adapters. It may save you money and fabrication if you have to buy a rearend weld mounts to make it fitn like I did. My original rearend had 5.38 gears, so I would have had to change everthing. Don't be afraid of the billet adapters. I've been running a set on my '69 C-30 car for years with weights higher than you could ever put on a pickup and they are rock solid. Here are a few places to get them.

If you are using the original eaton rearend under your truck, swapping ratios couldn't be easier. Just buy another center section with the gears you want, and bolt it in. Downside is you are fairly limited with your selection; only 4.11, 4.57, and 5.14 are the most widely available oem ratios. However, depending on what you are doing with the truck, I think the 4.11's would work well for you, and keep it streetable.

That is a nice looking job on that truck. Are you going to shave one of the rear marker lights? I'd leave just one on the actual fender itself.

Since it's a '67, I am going to shave both the one on the fleetside bed and the stepside fender. I am going to come back put some kind of small markers on the stepside so I can see them at night. I just think the factory markers look too big and gauky to be clearance lights. I have a set of lights from the '97 C3500 I got my rearend from. I may put them in right below the body ridge which is about the same location as the they came on the '88 - '98 trucks like in the pic below.

67_C-30- Thanks for all the help, had seen the dually converters in JC Whitney but didn't take them serious. I'll givee them another look. I'm running 4.11's now, was thinking more like 3.90 since I have the Gear Vendor aux. I have a couple of "before" pics I'll post if I can figure out how. Figured out how to load these pics, everthing is "before" except the egine shot. Thats a new 427 Tall Deck. Am working on painting the cab and front end this week, will do the bed when I figure out how I'm going to do the dually....

48ish - that truck will look great in dually form! It should be hoss with the 427 tall deck and GV OD!

Thanks guys...I just finished painting the front end tonight, I'll be sure to post more pics when I get all the bits and pieces back on. I got a good deal on a set of dually wheels (all 6) for $150, and looked at the adapters, I'm thinking I might go that route .

67_C30...how did you end up marrying the fenders to the bed? screws? bolts? what size/type? or did you weld them? ..

I welded tabs to the backside and drilled hole in the fleet bedside and bolted them on with (10) 5/6 - 18 bolts. The tabs are actually part of the stepside fender that I cut to contour it to the fleet bedside. There's a lot more pics and details on my build thread in my sig.
