I really need some help from a local member that can weld a broken spring in my bench seat, it's the weird "Z" spring that holds up the very end of the foam pad (when you slide out of the truck it keeps the foam from compressing down too far) I want to re-cover the seat, but first I need this spring repaired, anyone here locally that could do it, I will pay $$, or beer, or trade for other parts I have ect.

wow, this is great, you meet the nicest people in Alabama & Kentucky! I was sure hoping one of the locals would be so kind, but I guess beggers can't be choosers, the seat is out of 72, can you look & see if you have the spring? I need the one that goes on the driver's side, there's only one like it on each end of the bench seat, if you have one I'll buy it & pay for shipping, I have another seat, but the same spring is broken & I'm not sure if their bent the exact same way on the passenger side.

If you weld it, you will lose the metalurgical property in the spring. It would be much better to get one off an old seat.

If you weld it, you would take the temper out. You'd have to heat the whole spring and take the temper out. Weld it, and then re-temper it. Best to find a new spring.(take it out of another seat?) Hope this helps?

I had the same spring broken on both sides of the seat that I bought used. I believe it's a fairly common weak point.

On mine, I took a spring from an older style bench seat and formed the spring to fit. Ain't the best, but it worked for now.

Go to local upholstry shop and buy a new one cheap cut it to length and install. Should be less than 10.00

it willl probly break again not because of who will weld it but because of the material. its "spring steal" witch doesnt like to be welded

Huh... learn somethin new every day I guess. I knew there was a metallurgical difference between spring steel and regular steel, and I suppose it makes sense that welding would tamper with the molecular structure of the steel. Interesting stuff

Mine broke were it's welded to the seat frame and I T.I.G. welded it and it hasn't broke yet. But they're saying if it's actually in the spring it will break again. Spring steel doesn't like being put back together.

hey lowride, i can do it for you if you wanna come up to whidbey. my buddy has a welder that i can use. should be a simple fix if you aren't concerend with the whole retempering thing for the time being.

I guess I never thought about the tempering aspect of it, it's just broke into 2 pieces & I thought it could be welded back together, I guess I will look for a new one or make one out of the old seat. Thanks very much everyone for all the advice, I'd hate for the spring to break again after I stretch & hog ring the new $200 cover on it.

im glad others agree see i kinda know because i am a welder at a local shop and my boss who has probly forgotten more then i know lol tells me you cant weld spring steal it will always break again

Upholstery shops have the spring wire, they buy it by the roll. Take the bench to them and they will fix it, this really no biggy.
