My Tuck is making me so mad!!! Help ME

Ok heres the story. My truck would not start over break and it was wicked cold so after checking the usual i called AAA. Got it taken to the shop and after a new battery they said I had a vaccume leak on my carb so I got the carb I wanted...an Edelbrock 600cfm #1406...they installed it and when i got it back it ran ok...ideled a lot smoother and whatnot but i still felt like i had lost some power but didnt think much of it because i was just glad to have my truck back. drove it to school fine and then today absolutly had no power...almost didnt make it up a small hill...had it floored but no power...of the line it blows...i thought I would get better performance with the new carb...my friend says that it is ether running way to rich or the timing is off...do you guys have any idea what is wrong?...i just spent a lot of money for the new carb and what not i really would like to fix this...I have a 3000 mile warenty on the work from the shop so i could take it back but its a 2 hour drive away...i just need some ideas so that when i talk to the guy i have some ideas....thanks a lot guys...

That carb is running way too lean. No gas = no power. The carb was never tuned correctly to the motor.

cold weather problems

It could be a sticking or misadjusted choke or possibly water in the gas tank which could cause iceing in the fuel line in your freezing tempetures . Check the throttle plate when the engine heats up to make sure the choke is off and add a couple of cans of dry gas ( its an additive you can buy ) . I used to live there in Mass. and it sucked in the winter so now I live in the south west and it was near 70 today . Good luck .

One more thing if its really cold , put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to help the engine get hot quicker and knock the choke off. I remember when I was back there on a really cold day it would take forever for the choke to knock off unless I blocked the radiator .

Double check your intake manifold bolts, make sure your not getting a vac leak there too. Just make sure everything is tight.

I hate my truck too. To day after work I go to start it. Wouldnt start.....sat there until my friend was done working out in the company gym.....got a jump....got truck started....locked keys inside truck...while running....Friend drove me home to get spare key that was LOCKED in my room. Needless to say two nice kicks to the door and im in. Went back and got truck. I knew what the problem was the whole time. It has been getting hard to start for the past few days. Like it doesnt have any juice. It was a loose connection on the starter. The bolt that you screw the nut on to was loose. Tightened everything back up and it works fine now. I hate those stock starters they are way too heavy. Thats why Im dropping a mini starter in the suburban.
Didnt mean to go on, just thought I would share my pain.

I would check the linkage to the carb. Stock linkage for a quadrajet will not open the edlebrock to anywhere near full throttle

The carb was icing on me in my Ford, I put insulation on the grille, helped a whole lot. Another thing I would recomend is dump some gas line antifreeze in your tank. Also put the original air cleaner set-up back on for the winter and try to rig up the stove pipe onto your headers or something

I would first replace the fuel filter ,
then check to see if I have 12 volts at the Choke only with the key on.
adjust the choke ,make sure the linkage moves freely .
check the timing .

also if you still have a stock air cleaner it could be blocking the linkage form opening all the way. also look real good at the linkage i somehow had a linkage rod bend one time on my 1411 edel and everything got all fubarred was binding the rod for the accelerator pump and wasnt gettin any gas at all much over an idle

Do you even have a fuel filter any more? The filter on the stock set-up was part of the carb, so if they did not install a filter when they put on the new carb, you no longer have one. In that case, your new carb is probably plugged up with crap from the fuel tank.

Yes I do have fuel filter...An inline one was installed with the new carb...I also wanted to say that when I get the truck moving like down the highway it can keep its pace going...I still doesnt have the power it used to though. I used to be able to smoke my tires offf the line if i just stomped on it...Now it just putts along...THanks for all the help so far guys.

Make sure you are getting full throttle , I had to use an adapter that moved the throttle cable back about an 1" .

OK...I talked to my mechanic that put everything in and he said i just need more timing advance...he said that should fix my problem. What you guys think?

I had an Edelbrock 600 cfm (model 1401 - manual choke). I replaced it with a new Edelbrock 750 cfm QJet, with divorced choke. My timing is set at about 10 degrees advance. I just had to replace my distributor....got an Accel BluePrint HEI. Truck runs better than ever. I have to be careful when accelerating on wet pavement or the rear end breaks loose....not good.

I did not like the model 1401. I have enjoyed the improved performance of the model 1901 QJet.
