Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

I think sidepipes are for 60s and 70s vans and same year corvetts on anything else it looks getto. I saw one the other day and it didnt look good. It looked like it was owned by some guy south of the boarder it had a big pic of a bull on the door and a laso hanging from the rearview mirror

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

Can you believe I was looking for an excuse to scan and post this pic! This was in the November 1976 issue of Hot Rod magazine. I think the look has held up surprisingly well over the years (with exception of the reflective butterfly on the fender). If anything he was ahead of his time. Looks like ghost flames and a super low stance. Actually seeing the side pipes looks way better than I would have imagined them. Would I actually run them?? Well.........

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

you won't find a kit that'll get all the way back to the rear wheel. if it's short, it's ugly in my opinion. the only way to get it back there is weld to pieces together and get em chromed

Thumbs up Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

Side pipes started as the best way to run a performance exhaust system and have a low stance... as in road race course. That's why the vettes had them, and shelby's A/C Cobra. then, the street guys took notice, and it became part of the hot rod craze in the 60s and 70s. They were put on everything back in the day.
That lowered red truck pulls it off only becouse it has craiger ss rims. (this is all my opinion here) Pretty much any other lowered red truck would have a modern theme to it and they wouldn't look right.
They would look even better on a short wheel base, with the nose down and the rear up a bit... esp if it was a step side. Basicly, if it is done in a 60s or 70s theme, they'll work. This was the route I was gonna go with my old 69 GMC, till I discovered it was worth its weight in scrap.
You can still get these at jegs, I think they carry up to a 104 inch length with a shield. The ones with shields are generally functional, the ones that are just chrome pipe are normally refered to as lake pipes and are more for the lead slead 50's custom cars.

Not many ppl care for them anymore, but, with the whole 'rat rod' craze... I think side pipes too, will come full circle and become the next hot ticket one day.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

To me they take away from the looks of our trucks. IMHO. But then again I like LWB and SWB trucks alike so that explains my thought process? It still comes down what you like 69C10@16. If you like side pipes then go for it. We all have different opinions to what we do and do not like about our trucks.

AND the truck has to be prety slammed that the one in HOT ROD

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

I had a set of Thrush sidepipes on my '65 SWB, back in '76. It was probably the best-looking thing on that bucket 'o rust. When the plugs would start gas-fouling and popping through the pipes, it made me wonder what was going to go next. Luckily, my wife left me, with the kids and I had no job and I had to sell it to buy Christmas, groceries and pay rent and utilities. Geeze, I forgot how good life was, back then. Got enough to do all that, for $275.

I asked the same question a few months back. Here's the only pic I got. It's kinda small and blurry.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

I've never cared for them on trucks. They do look great on Camaro,Vettes, mudstains, Firebirds,Chevelles all the muscle cars if they have a 70's theme to them. I saw a set here in town on a 96 Camaro and they looked pretty nasty imo. They just didn't look right on the newer car.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

I really like the way that red one looks. I agree, i wish those stands could be moved for the copper one. I'm not going to do it, money and time prevents it. I just got a new exhaust put on when i bought the tuck in mid august so until it NEEDS it, it stays as is. right now it runs from the headers into 24" glasspacks and then turns out b4 the rear tires. I thought about dumping it right after the glasspacks but i would want to know what it sounded like first. Thats sumthin i hate about decisions on my truck. I want to do it, but i want to know what the effect is FIRST....lol....thats how it always goes though. Anyways....thanks for the pics....if anyone has more feel free to send them....good or bad...pretty or ugly....thanks again guys.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

my 67 stepper will have them. I am thinking of the lake pipes version to go with the flat black paint and flat red scallops. I also plan to slide in a 4 speed and an ape hanger shifter with a Ham's beer tap. this should all look OK with some Cragar SS wheels.

I think the ones on that copper truck are factory Vette pipes.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

That could be a nice hotrod ford with a 390 or 427 under the hood. Ahem...I've never been much of a sidepipe fan but they could look good on the right vehicle.

I think they look cool on the right ride.. Like that old ford though the side pipes kinda blend into the style of the truck.

Re: Anyone ever do sidepipes?

I think they look good on most older vehicles(pre 60's), depending on the specific ride and how it's put together.
I also agree with the gen consensus that they need to go to the rear wheel opening otherwise they just don't look right.
But I really dig them when they are integrated into a running board/ rocker .
