1970 new truck test

It was very rare for any magazine to test pickups before the mid-70's, what a shame.Found one from Febuary 1970 Mechanix Illustrated. They liked it alot.I don't know why the left side mirror was removed.

Great find! That is the first test I've seen in an old magazine. I agree, that's a shame!

i have one from 69 on the longhorn... a 3 page one that goes into a little more detail. I'll have to try and scan it again. I had it posted years ago.

Re: 1970 new truck test

Neat find! "Rig finished third in zero- 60 runs". I wonder what was first & second? If they were comparing HD pickups from the big 3, I could see a 390 ford w/ 4:10s beating the 402 if it had 3.54s. But I don't think a 318 with any ratio would compare, and I think that is the biggest Dodge offered back then.

Re: 1970 new truck test

Dodge ran 383s in 2wds and had a 440 truck.I doubt that one was in the comparison. They were comparing camper haulers,it looks like. The 440 truck was a sport model 1/2t.I still think a 402 would beat a 390.

Re: 1970 new truck test

Could it be that the mirror was removed to mount the fifth wheel that would have been used for speed testing? However, the normal mounting was to mount it at the rear of the fender, using the suction-cups that were part of the system.

I like looking through older publications for stuff like this. Thanks for posting it.

Re: 1970 new truck test

I didn't think Dodge ran a BB in trucks till '73 or later. I agree most of the 390 Fords were dogs, 360s even worse. But I must admit I've seen some strong running 352 & 390 greasers.

Dodge put 440's in some of their trucks, I think in '67-69.

Re: 1970 new truck test

I try to contribute historic information to the forum because that is my main interest. The pickups tested were all 3/4 tons, Chevy, Ford, Dodge and International. The Dodge was the fasted with a 383, the Ford was second with a 390 V8. However, all were within 1 second of each other.I believe results would be different if they all had the same size tires and gear ratios, which they did not.Engines used in pickups usually had lower compression than car engines, so they would not require premium fuel.

Re: 1970 new truck test

Thanks for the "extra" info on the competition. Didn't mean to spin the thread in a different direction. But curiosity got to me.

I'm always watching for your posts- the pics & info you post are always very interesting
