Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Am I the only one here who gets a kick out of setting off car alarms as I drive by?
Y'all really are getting old. Just saw the tailpipes off in front of the muffler. When you decide you don't like it, it only takes a few minutes to weld em back together, plus you will be able to start another thread on what welder or tape to use on tailpipes.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
muffler shop owner, "What kind of sound ya want? Loud, obnoxious?? Got loud or quiet".
me, "No, how about some nice quiet duals that don't attract too much attention". Maybe I'm older (37) but I was one of those "kids" in the early ninties that was reaching 125dB behind the seat in my S-10. Now my hearing is screwed. I like my quiet now..... Re: How do I make the truck loud???
A unique and easy to do modification that is well within your skill level would be to take a 1/4" drill bit (preferably attached to the drill motor of your choice) - and swiss cheese your muffler bodies till the desired decibel level is reached.
Then, when you are satisfied that loud pipes is not the only way to go for the chicks and the glory, just wrap them up again with some stainless tape. I discovered this mod when looking under the chassis of a friend's '68 Camaro about 17 years ago and was as amazed then as i would be now

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Old school philosophy 101 says, "If you can't make it run, make it loud!"
One or the other, your choice. Mine is louder than the Lexus, but the Lexus will outrun it. Yeah, it sucks. I wanna put some rice-burner fart cans on her car, but she doesn't see the humor in it. Go figure...

This thread could easily be turned into an which is cooler thread, old school muffs or new school crazy loud straights. Being from the older group I like the sound of the 60's Hemi mufflers, Chevelle mufflers, Corvette mufflers. With the right tailpipe length and diameter they idled and cruised with just a small increase in sound over most stockers but really TALKED when you stomped the go pedal. For years I ran dual hemi muffs behind my 350 Olds with short dumps and loved it. Ya, it TALKED. Times change and what we knew was cool the younger generation don't. They have decided louder is better so then came all those long big diameter tubes hangin under the rear of them. I call them goober tubes for no better words. JMO, louder isn't always better. Sorry if I stepped on anybody's toes. JMO

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Yep things have changed alot. Back in the day, I knew all the common V8's sound. Stock exhaust or not. Each make had its own characteristics that you could pick out easily, no matter what type of exhaust it had. Mopar & Olds were very distinct. Fords were the easiest to get "farmer cackle" as we called it- the pop & snap you would get when backing off the gas from low to mid rpms. GM's were more noted for "ripping the pipes" when backing of at high rpms. Today's typical big pipes off a cat just go ehhhhhhhhhhhhh when you back off. The ones I really can't stand are the Mustangs with straight thru X pipes. They are everywhere, and all sound the same. Must be something with a "me too" mindset. When I was young, If my ride or a friends sounded anything alike, one of us would be making changes ASAP.

You're right, most of them sound nothing like a performance engine or a musclecar. The first 3 are what poretty much all the kids trucks sound like around here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aDDzGl5JTLU&feature=related http://youtube.com/watch?v=umngvNqNbT4 http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wtx0VJHZOfw&feature=related The next 3 are what a musclecar with some horsepower sounds like. All loud, but lots of difference in tone. http://youtube.com/watch?v=MmxqfcDW9oQ&feature=related http://youtube.com/watch?v=eIFP_ZNxIhE http://youtube.com/watch?v=W3Yju1_WD9Q&feature=related

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Aaahhh! Just make sound recordings and pipe it out weatherproof speakers. Sound like a muscle car one minute, a harley the next, or a Honda civic or a tug boat or a freight train . Pull up to someone beating his boombox and play Motzart

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
i would say to run long headers with 2 3/4 pipe with 12 in glass packs would realy do the trick then break in you packs by putting water and warming the pack up by reving the engine. works for me by putting most vehicles to shame.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Just run open headers.I don't think it could get any louder than that.I ran mine last week with open headers and it will not be driven again until it has exhaust. The drone and vibration had my head spinning for hours.Im goin with 40 series flowmasters coming out in front of the rear tires at a 45 degree angle.F'in schweet

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Loud pipes? The PO of my truck had Flowmaster 40 series installed. For me they are a bit much, but to each his own...I agree with what was said earlier. Saw it off before the muffler then when you get annoyed weld it back together. All its going to impress is, is a bunch of other dudes....Dudes, meaning, not chicks. All Im saying is your gonna feel like a real douch bag when some older guy in one of them frame off 502 jobs comes rolling up next to you at a stoplight and his Car/truck isnt as loud as yours and he smokes you off the line. I heard a comedian say one time that you think your so cool in your Chrysler 300 because it looks like a Bentley, until a Bentley actually pulls up next to you, same principal. But IMHO when you know you got the bite, you dont have to have the bark to back it up.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
Go with 40s or get some glasspacks and heat them up (take a drive or romp on it in your driveway) then spray cold water on them

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
hah, i'm one of those assholes with straight pipes on my Z71. Yes I am a redneck, and yeah it's got the cats on it still. Only reason that is is because i don't know if it will affect the computer (set codes off) if I hack the cats off. And yes, my 72 does have pipes, with some old school sounding loud glasspacks. Every truck I've owned has been a V8 and has had pipes (or a lack of, in the case of my barely-piped-headers effin loud 69 C-10)
Call me stupid for having straights on my Z71, or whatever you want. Personally, I don't like stock or quiet exhaust on my trucks. I like pipes, and I like noise, bout as much as I like power.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
I have no problem with your above statement. The various points made here is there is a following for the various exhaust sounds. I grew up in the era of muscle cars so from my background I enjoy the true muscle car sound. Some like the Z71 sound and that is ok to and there is nothing wrong with that sound. I think it comes down to an age thing. Old geezers like me cut our teeth in the muscle car era while you younger folks grew up in the Z71 era. Both are right and neither is wrong. We have differrent sound taste. It's your truck and you need to get the sound that strikes your fancy. Good Luck.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
I remember once when I was in high school, the county sheriff pulled me over because he said he could hear me coming from about 3 miles away.
That was back in the muscle car days of the late 60's /early 70's when everybody was running burned out "cherry bombs" I still love the sound of a good running V8.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
When I bought my truck it had headers with glass packs bolted directly to the flange and no pipe coming out of the glass pack, so all my exhaust consisted of was header and glass pack. FREAKIN LOUD!!! I could barely drive the thing due to the resonance in the cab.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???
You want to hear something loud, these are the engines that I work on . It would be hard to fit them in a truck though, since they're about the size of a house.
V12 15,528 cubic inches 3500 HP at 1000 RPM
