Switched over from manual to auto and i figured if i was going to hack up the column i might was well try to install a tilt column. I've found info hear and there but maybe someone here can answer my questions..

What year tilt columns will work?
What modifications are required to fit to the stock steering box?

column shift or not, I can just cut off the shifter.(Putting a floor shifter in)

Re: tilt column

Van column work well, up to 1980. If you get one cut the harness plug out of the van so you can make a junction plug. A few of the wires are differnt but most are the same. The plugs are differnt is all. I set the column up in the truck first and then welded two nuts on it to mount it to the bracket. It worked out just fine, and I used a u joint where the columns met. The bottom half I took out of a 92 Caprice but any one from a later truck will work also.

You can kinda see the junction plug in the last picture but the hand brake kinda blocks it.

I have a chance to get a tilt column out of a 79 suburban for cheap. Would it work?

Re: tilt column

It will fit with some modification, check this out - http://www.persh.org/pickup/steering.htm - it'll give an idea (along with some pictures) of what it takes to accomplish the install.

Why did you get rid of the van column?

Re: tilt column

Is 30 bucks good for a 79 suburban tilt column?

I think I'm going to pick it up sometime this week.
Probably spend about 15 in gas to drive down to georgetown.

Re: tilt column

I am using the wiring harness from the 88 burb. So the column will fit right in. The high beam switch is on the column also. I could go back if I want. I have another van column that is better then the one that was in the truck. I also get the locking steering wheel which I know is no big deal but it is better then nothing.

Re: tilt column

Any column can be made to work. It's just figuring out how to mount it and then adapt to the wiring. I used one from an Astro van. Had to enlarge the cut out in the dash to fit the larger diameter column then built a simple mount for it. About an hours worth of work and it's mounted and ready to hook up.
