I saw a thread a while back about stripping the anodizing off an alum grill shell with oven cleaner. How well does this work? Also, i would guess it wouldnt be good to leave the stuff on too long.....need advice from anybody who has tried this....crazyL

Sodium Hydroxide + Aluminum = Bad Mojo

It'll remove the anodizing all right. It'll probably look like hell afterwards though.

I used the oven cleaner methed on both my trucks with good results. spray it on and let it work awhile till the anodizing will come off with steel wool, time depends on temp, the warmer the quicker. steel wool then rinse and then start over till its all dull, after that sand with 400 grit and finish with 1000 grit then hit the buffing wheel. it will shine great but you'll have to polish it with mothers or something from time to time.

I've used this method too and it does work. It usually takes 2-3 hits. Do not let it dry on the surface or it's a bear to remove!

Here's a link for a special product to remove annodizing also. I haven't tried it though.

Thanks for the info guys, the easy off is on the 2nd hit& pretty much took all the anodizing the 1st time! crazyL

So, if the EZ-Off will get the anodized finish off (well, that and some elbow grease), would you want to clear-coat it when you get it nice and shiny? Seems like it would be the right thing, but that may not be the case.

I heard clear coating is a no no you'll regret it , just us mothers wax

Im not sure how this one will go yet. The old grill has a couple bruised areas that I need to bump & file, then block sand. if I can get it straight enough to polish, I probably will just leave it raw & do the elbow grease from time to time. I have also thought about having it powdercoated....crazyL
