60-66 auto shift column.

Has anyone used the stock auto steering column with a 700r4 tranny? I was wondering if it will shift through all the gears? Thanks in advance. 62 short step.

If it is a 3 speed auto column it should have enough slop to do it. At least mine did.

Well its a power glide column. So I guess it won't. I wonder if a 67-72 3 speed auto column would work? Anyone know? Sorry for all the questions.

I dont see why that would'nt work? Lokar makes a kit to go from the column to the tranny, and it is just a matter of adjusting movement ratio on the tranny. I used it to go from the standard column and a 700R4. It should work just as well with any column. If I can find it again, I will pass on a link.

Re: 60-66 auto shift column.

I've been considering the same linkage in my 64 Suburban with 700r4, but I saw that the linkage is only 17 inches long? I measure about 24 inches for length needed. Did you have to add/change rod length? Thanks!

The power glide colum will work with the 700R4, you just won't be able to shift it into low manually, maybe. Who knows it might do it. I had a column out of a 76 Van.

Re: 60-66 auto shift column.

I can always grind out the detent to allow more range, if necessary, but I was wondering about the length of the rod? If I have to fab my own rod, I'm thinking I may as well fab it all!

Re: 60-66 auto shift column.

We sell Lokar products. I do not have one in front of me but I believe the rod is under 24". If installed on a 350/400 you do not have to cut the rod at all so maybe the rod would not be long enough.

I also used one out of a 67-72 truck, but my engine is in the same location as the 67-72 trucks.

Re: 60-66 auto shift column.

I have used the factory automatic (2-speed Powerglide RPNDL) with a 700R4 in my '66 Chevy C10 swb fleetside Custom. It worked great. You have to have feel for it since there is only D & L on the shift indicator.

Re: 60-66 auto shift column.

Thanks guys. I bought the Lokar auto shift rod & linkage. It worked great with the factory 60-66 auto column. Only one problem, the rod itself was too short. The rod was 20 inches. So I went to the hardware store and and bought another one and cut it to the size I needed. It ended up being 24 inches in length that I needed, once that was done it works great. Jeremy.
