I have heard people talk about integral and non integral heads, but i have no idea which one i have??? It is a 1971 gmc 2wd 1/2 ton swb. It came with a 250 stock but i was told it was rebuilt and i want to customize it but want to order the right parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Integral heads have the intake and head all cast as one piece. These were the last of the inlines produced by GM...well, until recently that is.

Burke, if the intake and the head are one piece then it is an integral. It is my understanding that any integral head is limited by the intake being a part of the head.In other words you can't upgrade to a multi carb or 4 BBl setup. If you can't get the engine to breathe then it will never perform.
You might want to invest in a "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder power manual" It is written by "Leo Santucci" Runs about $19.95 and the ISBN (Give it to your bookstore or use it at www.motorbooks.com to get a faster lookup) is 1-931128-15-4 It will give you a better idea on getting power from that 6. Anotheer good resource is www.inlinersinternational.com
