How do I know if my carrier bearing is going out?

Does it go "ee er ee er ee er" under 20 mph or so ? I can push up and down on the first driveshaft 3/16" or so . Its kind of a rubbery sound. Checked all my wheel bearings . Cant figure out where the sound is coming from . seem s like its undeer the truck though. Help !!!!

The carrier bearing is pressed onto the driveshaft. I have never chenged one before, but I am about to find out how to do it too. lol I think there are 3 or 4 types, so you might be able to tel which one you have without bringing it in. The ones the parts stores seel aren't excatly the best quality, so I got one from here: http://www.iedls.com/ They have 2 different kinds, and they are way better than anything else i have seen.

I used a propain tortch and a hammer to get mine off. Only took 15 min or so.
I was told there was no way it'd come off that way...but it did.
Then on reassembly...it was winter so the shaft was already cold...I tossed the C-bearing into the stove for a few min, put some light oil on the shaft, and it slid all most all the way on by hand. Just some love taps with a small tap tap hammer.

Here's what I did.pull the driveshaft out of the truck. You have to get the middle u-joint out of the driveshaft. There will be a bolt going through the yoke on the same side that the carrier bearing is on. Take that bolt out pull the yoke off and beat the hell out of the carrier bearing with a mallet. When you go to put it back on push it onto the driveshaft as much as you can then use the yoke and the bolt that holds the yoke to press it in the rest of the way. You might want to change your other two u-joints at the same time. Hope that helps. good luck

Hey longhorn...I never thought about using a torch. lol that would have probably saved me about 30 minutes worth of beating the crap out of it. Oh well... I got some of my anger out.

I actually put a carrier bearing on my "71 C-10 yesterday. It had the light duty bearing with the two inline (with the driveshaft)bolts. I had never done one before. Cost 32.95 from napa. I did a search on this board for some hints. Can't remember who, but someone posted a real indepth how too on the subject. I just used sledge hammers, vice, big sockets, and a short piece of pipe (to drive the new one on. Luckily no torches. It's easyier than it looks. Except for dropping the sledge on my big toe!

Hey MikeP, I did mine a couple of months back because
it was making the same noise as yours.

I just took it to national auto parts in Tacoma,
and they pressed it off and put the new one on for about $15.

Money well spent unless you like to beat on things...

Hadem' slap on some new u-joints while they were at it.!!

Mine looks nothing at all like that. It's the one with the bolts on the side. I assume most 3/4 tons will have the same one I do. Since the vast majority of the 67-72's in this area are 3/4 tons I hope the parts store has the one I'll need. I'd hate to pull the damned thing out on Sunday and find they have to order it in. I kind of like to drive it to work and stuff.

I hate to do it at all to be honest. I'll be installing the short step bed this summer with a corresponding short or shortened frame and a one piece driveshaft.

It looks like thang is just pressed on the middle yoke. Is that it? If so then its no big deal. I have a 30 ton enerpac electric over hydraulic shop press.

$15????? Hummmmmm, mean I realy wouldn't have had to drop that sledge on my foot? It would have been worth it to pay the $15 if I didn't have to wait too long or drive too far.

I had the same one you are talking about on my 2wd and I had to cut mine off with a torch. I pride my self on my large selection of "bfh's" and none of them worked for me so I had to shave it off with my favorite wrench, the hot wrench. The i just used a piece of pipe and a hammer to tap the new one on.
