Tranny - 2 speed?
1970 c10 - I think the TH350... from 0-65, I only notice ONE shift, and at 75mph, its screaming pretty good (no tach)
Im tempted to just go to austin drivetrain and have them look/deal... Anyone have any simple fixes or is this an "open it up" thing? |

check them vacuum line from the intake to the transmission modulator, this happened to me before and all it was... was the vacuum came off! lol!
hope yours is that simple!

I honestly find it hard to believe you would make it to 75 in second gear. It isn't very tall. I have a 350 and if I hit 50 it's screaming pretty good. 75 in third screams too. Are you sure you're not just missing the second shift?

if there are only 2 forward selections on the shifter... it may be a powerglide 2 speed tranny. What does the SPID (option sheet) say in the glove box?

Also, if you only have D and L, that seems like it would be a two speed, maybe a Powerglide? The 350 would have D/L2/L1. With as much butchering as some of these trucks go through you could always have the wrong gear indicator. I just know in my 350 1st to 2nd happens very quickly and if you're just cruising sometimes I miss it.

most ppl think that in 70 the glide was no longer avalible... this is the 2nd one I've seen.

And knowing what we now know - how can I make cruising at 65 not sound like im gonna blow a piston out the hood? Up my rear end ratio for final drive?

rear drive ratio will need to be swapped for sane RPM's. That, or a 700 R4 or 200 4R.
Some ppl love the glide... mostly drag race guys. Personally, i'm not a big fan. I wouldn't call it a bad thing... just not good. |

Down numerically.Supposing the current ratio is a 3:73 then going to a 3:08 will lower RPM's.It is a higher speed per RPM change.Knowing your current ratio will help determine what ratio you need to go to.Some one should post a calculator for RPM X tire size X gear ratio.You may be able to improve things somewhat by going to a taller tire though it wont be as much as with a gear swap unless the change in size is a dramatic one.

glides are fun for weekend cruisers...but no fun for highway driving,my 71 had a built glide and i loved it around town on friday and sat nights....

power glides are mainly good for drag cars weighing 2500/2600 lbs or less.
The best mod I did to my gutless 283/powerglide 67 Impala with 336 rear gears was install a TH350........went from gutless non tire spinning to being able to get out of its own way and tire spinning made easy. Glides can be swapped for th350's with ease of parts swap and all. Its a very common swap that actually yields great results.

This is what I use
For automatic transmissions you have to add around 300 RPM for the torque converter

This is funny.I guess you never notice there were only two gears on the column indicator.I also thought`69 was the last Powerglide year.It`s pretty cool,I think.It has nothing to do with your final drive ratio,but P/Gs did come with a lower gear than the TurboHydramatics,in general.The Powerglide is a tougher trans than an r700.But,not adequate gearing for todays faster hyper pace.If you drive a Powerglide like we all should be to save gas money(pull off gradually with a light touch on the throttle and accelerate gradually*),that`s how they are at they`re best (or built for 1/4 mile).
