sound deadener

once more, another interior Q for my truck haha


In a week, I plan on taking my truck to my friends house, pulling the motor out to replace all the gaskets and any other things that need to be replaced, sanding and painting the valve covers, master cylinder, power brake booster, A/C unit, and maybe the fender wells. . . .in this time period i have recently considered pulling my seats and such out of the cab and lining everything with sound deadener. I'm just spitballin here so any advice, agreements, arguments, referrals, or help would be tremendous. . .i will post a picture of my interior but frankly. . .if you don't know what the inside of a truck looks like. . .i'm not sure you would be a solid reference for truck interior advice

Go for it. It took me and my brother a while to do what you just listed because we ended up just buying a new motor over putting the 283 back in and it snoballed out of control. oh and one of these would look great in there you would be amazed at how much better you will feel with a clean looking engine compartment http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

when my dad did his frame off resto on his 68 GTO he and actualy used ice and water shielding and also did some dyno mat and got great results http://www.graceathome.com/pages/roofingprod.htm

I actually haven't got to putting sound deadner in my truck yet but here is a pretty good sound deadner reference article I saved awhile back, thought it might be of interest to you. As far as putting it in there or not there is no way that my interior is going back in the truck without sound deadener, not sure if it is worth pulling the interior to put it in though.

Anyway check out this article, it is probably starting to get a little dated as I bookmarked it over a year ago.

Thanks much for the article. . .definately helped!! but my friend has an 84 Jimmy. . .he has two 12's in an enclosed box in the back and two memphis a 6x9s in the side panel. . .he had that for a while and it sounded decent. . .about a month ago he pulled everything out and for his birthday his dad ran 2nd skin throughout and replaced the weather atripping throughout and it sounds 6251651651 times better haha

I installed Fatmat in my cab. It's still in the building stages, so I don't know the true effect yet. But it took a lot of the hollow sound out of the otherwise empty cab already. I imagine that once the rest of the interior is finished, it'll make a huge difference.

It was hands down the best price I found, and it seems like a good product so far. Easy to install, and sticks very well. 50sf did the back wall, floor, and firewall on my truck. With about a 6"x6" piece left over.

I bought 2nd Skin after reading that article. The guy that owns 2nd Skin should buy the author of that article a nice second home in the Bahamas. Can't beat quality testimonials!

I found when I was installing mine that it had an interesting odor, nothing that lasted or that was annoying, but I eventually figured out what it smells like. It smells like the inside of a tanning bed, and don't ask me how I know!

haha yeah that smell has proven to not be very bad at all

but what all did you cover, and how much did you end up using?

did 50sq ft cover it?

I ordered 60sqft and have one piece left so I used about 58 sqft. I did the floor, firewall up to the rounded part, the back of the cab, the roof under the headliner and inside the doors. Doing the doors was a bit of a pain but well worth it.

I see. . .is your gas tank moved or still behind the seat? I have been told that that is a good stereos worst nightmare, an aluminum tank. . .i can understand that being the case so wondering, is yours moved? if not, did you cover it too?

I moved my fuel tank out of the cab. I built a sub box for four tens to fit where the tank was. If you use the 10"s from Elemental Designs and build the box just right you can still put the seat all the way back. I still need seal the box tight, paint it and mount it permanently. It sorta moves around back there now, .

Yea I am sending 1000w at those subs, it pounds pretty hard. And with the sound deadner everywhere there is virtually no rattling or tin can type sounds.

Sweet, what about airflow? Right now i don't have a stereo in my truck, but when i drive i hear air whistling everywhere!! Bad weather stripping or something else?

How necessary is sound deadener actually? I mean i know it makes a difference,. . .but is it something that can wait?

I would say it depends on whether your interior is all removed or not. If you need to pull the seat and carpet to do it, you could do hat when it is convenient.
