mid engine 68
Has anyone had any experience in seeing or wrenching a mid engine in a 67 - 72 long bed? I was thinking, I have a 68 that has been sitting for a while and was thinking about how far out there i could get with it. I was tinkering with 500 ci caddy backed by powerglide sitting behind cab inside the bed, wheelstander syle (old style dragging). 4-pack exhaust pipes exiting thru lower portion of bed in front of wheels. Bagged w/ independent front suspension and R & P steering. Lots of other wild ideas also but this would be the most elaborate.

Re: mid engine 68
forget about the 'glide. If you want a wheel stander, you want a good launch gear and a tranny with a good deep first gear.
Besides, if you are gonna lean on the sucker that hard, only a TH400 will do. At least, only a TH400 would do it over and over. |

Re: mid engine 68
I agree with Andy on the gearing but a powerglide isnt exactly a weak trans. They rob @ 1/3 of the hp a 400 does. Im no glide fan, but they arent junk either...

Re: mid engine 68
if you had to whole setup from an eldorado you can take it and by modifying it to eliminate the steering you can stip the whole thing into the bed and have a rear wheel drive

Re: mid engine 68
You'd be better off with the transaxle out of a GMC motorhome. It has better off the line gearing. With the eldo transaxle, you'd never pull the wheels, it has WAY too much of a freeway gear.

Re: mid engine 68
This might be interesting with a cam, rocker mods & a 150 shot. I have the 400 turbo that is still bolted to the block but with the long tail shaft it is way l o n g. I might pull the bed off this week and do some measuring. Kinda like the idea of a tranaxle but would'nt that put the motor directly over the wheels?

Re: mid engine 68
There was an article in I think Truckin' where an 80's model C-10 had a Toronado engine and transaxle transplanted about 20 yrs ago. Not a wheelstander though.

Re: mid engine 68
I believe Eldos have 308 gears, with the torque a 500 has you will wheelie big time if you get the power to the ground and with what has become available for the Torque monster Cad you can build some serious power! There are at least 4 Cad forums on line and Potter Automotive and MTS are at the fromt of the pack with parts and support and these guys aint no newcommers to the hot rod game. There are some utube vids of a 82 Coupe Deville pulling the front wheels at least 2 feet off the track!there is a Bonneville car a model A sedan that ran 160 in the mile on a stock 500 hes putting in a built 500 for this years Bonneville run should be exciting. Useing the Eldo FWD and locking the steering is without a doubt the easiest way to go and even at that you will have much modding to do But Id sure like to see it! OH there is also a fella on one of those forums that is doing that in an early econoline and its cool!

Re: mid engine 68
this sounds too cool i think it would be crazy fun but if u put the transaxle in the back wouldnt u have indapendant rear suspension so couldnt u get it to handle if u could keep the front wheels on the ground
