I droped a washer down the first port. Where does it go and how can I get at it?

Watch with a flashlight through the plug hole & lots of patience through the port with a small wire. Easier to pull the head & you might have to anyway if the valve is open & the washer went through...

The first hole is a coolant passage. It goes down to the water passages around the cylinders. Try a flexible magnet. My only fear would be that it gets into waterpump blades creating a little havoc. It may just settle to the bottom and never be seen or heard of again.

i pulled the head and got the washer out. this is a new motor. can reuse the gasket or should i replace it with a new one?

never reinstalled a head gasket...do you use silicone before you apply the gasket?

well i went and picked up a new felpro gasket. I cleaned both the block surface and the head surface, removing any old gasket. i then cleaned both surfaces with acetone and let dry and applied the felpro composite gasket without any sealer (thats what the book said to do). I torque the bolts acording to the sequence in my manual. I feel like such an idiot. Do you guys think I'lll be ok when I fire her up?

Thnaks again. I did a search on fel-pro gaskets and I was happy to see that they have a good reputation. Only thing that really sucks is that my new GM warranty is now void! I did save the old gasket though. Hey I guess it could be worse...at least the washer fell right out when I turned the head over, and isn't stuck in some water passsage. I now have rags stuffed in all of the ports and dizzy holes....(Lesson learned)!
