86 K10 Big Block install

a friend of mine is getting ready to put a 454 in his 86 K10, and i was wondering what needs to be done to make it work. we got all the donor parts from a 74 c10, is there anything else that needs to be bought? as far as motor mounts go, are they the same as small block mounts? is there ever any probleoms that force you to move the engine location front or back some?

thanks for any and all help

There are factory frame stands available for that. I believe that they move the engine foreward a little. Distributor clearence at the firewall and maybe valve cover with the brake booster are the biggest hurdles. Moving the engine/trans foreward may cause drive shaft length issues. If it is lifted, it might make the front better, but that rear will probably be too short.

Are you pulling just the engine or the engine/tranny combo? You shouldn't need to move the tranny/t-case any. The engine will bolt up to the trans with no clearance problems at all, even for the distributor.
As for the motor mounts themselves, yes they are different beween SB & BB. Even the frame mounted sides I believe are different as well. Back when I dropped an olds 455 into my 74 1/2 ton I had I put the mounts on the engine and bolted the frame mounts to them BEFORE I dropped it between the rails. Lowered it into position and bolted it to the tranny. I then proceeded to lower it the rest of the way until the mounts rested on the frame. With a white tire marker crayon I outlined the frame mounts on their resting points and pulled the engine back out. Then I removed the frme side of the mounts from the block, set them back on the cross member again and bolted hem down. After that tedious task the rest was a cake walk.

Re: 86 K10 Big Block install

I put a 454 from a 84 truck in my 79 k10 a few weeks back.I used the stock motor crossmember/stands from the 4wd and used the mounts on the motor from the big block. It went in and bolted up to the stock tranny no moving anything.I did use the 4 core rad,and shroud though. No clearance issues.I used the stock valve covers and exhaust manifolds.

Re: 86 K10 Big Block install

he bought headers for it, so they should fit. summit or wherever he got it said they will anyway.

i guess we'll just try and put er in, i just know ive heardthe big block swap is a pain in the 67-72's so i thought maybe it was a bit envolved in this style truck to.

I just put a 454 in my '87 this weekend, it had a 350 TBI in it. Motor mounts mounted up, no clearance issues, YET, everything went smooth.
