A good follow up and dizzy questions

Finally had time and bottom line I got it to start. It needs to be timed and/or a tune up, but it started.

Here is the original thread...... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=283477

Checked old dizzy cap, noticed 2 terminals w/slight gouges. Plugs 1 & 2. Old rotor looked fine. I had 12v at the coil, and nice blue spark. No spark at plugs. I pulled the dizzy. First thing I noticed, there is about 1/8" up and down play. Took points/cond off. Was gonna replace the black wire cuz of the flat spot, put tape on it instead. Reinstalled points and set gap. I checked all 8 lobes. 3 were .019, 4 were .014, 1 was .016. Installed dizzy and she fired right up. Once she warmed up, I got her to quit stumbling and it ran pretty good. Later today, I'll do the gauges and set it good.

Im gonna run her a bit, but my dizzy prolly needs help.
Im thinking....
...the end play, Is this good? I dunno?
...gouges in cap may relate to the point gap difference.
...hei is in my future, and feel better about the switch now that it runs.

Thanks much. Have fun,
.....don t. .....

Re: A good follow up and dizzy questions

Up & down play is normal but with the variations in point gap you probably have a bent dist shaft or worn bushings. HEI is the best way to go.

Re: A good follow up and dizzy questions

Many years ago, I knew what the spec was for vertical shaft play... and I had some GM washers to bring the play into spec. Sadly, the info and the washers are both long gone...

Wrenchbender is right about the point gap problems. Get the HEI, you'll love it.
