RARE option in 69?

i was reading somewhere...maybe my owners manual? something about a 4cyl diesel in my 69 truck.

my was a factory 6cyl, but could you actually get a diesel?

how many were made, i didn't think there really WAS such a thing back in the 60s.

Re: RARE option in 69?

The way I understand it the diesels were P-Series only.

Re: RARE option in 69?

Actually, the 3 cylinder 2 stroke Detroit 3-53 diesel was available in the P chassis from '67 to '69. There are rumors that a very few '67 pickups were built with V6 Toroflow diesels (a diesel version of the GMC V-6) but I doubt any of those were ever sold to the public. A few Toroflows have been retrofitted in '67-'72 pickups over the years.

A guy who lived right across the road from a farm we rented came over daily to shoot the bull, he sold GM's from the begining of time it seemed and he said they were testing diesels in our trucks for railroads and fleet users and they were out there. Stupid me never questioned him anymore and he passed away. I always wondered what diesels they were. I assumed either Detroit or Toroflows.

Re: RARE option in 69?

The 1970 factory service manual shows 3 diesels

159 cid L-3 82 hp and 193 lb-ft available in PT30 series
212 cid L-4 130/278 in CD50 series
478 cid V-6 (DH478) 165/337 in CG50 series

I am not sure what chassis all of the series desigantions refer to, but clearly none of them are pickup trucks.

Re: RARE option in 69?

I came across a 4x4 67 GMC pickup that the Vin said it was a Diesel...but it had been swapped to a gas job in its life when I saw it.

I heard some people say that some Toroflows made their way into some '67 pickups from the factory, but also heard other people say its not true. The way things were back then, I'd have to think there probably were a few that got out the door. I sure wish I could find one. Junk motor or not, I'd love to a Toroflow. (No, I don't know why?)

Re: RARE option in 69?

I have some friends that have a running Toroflow in a bus. They didn't have a great reputation (though GMC eventually got the bugs out of them). VERY tough to find parts for now. I have driven that bus on many occasions, and it does run pretty good.

Re: RARE option in 69?

the green one has a modified bed and suspention, so I would say it's almost certian to be a custom, the brown 67 has what looks like owner fabbed rad brackets, a fuel filter that looks like it's a later style to me... I would figure it is a swap too.

iIf such was true then the first two letters starting in the VIN would be "KG" designating K for conventional series 4wd and G for ToroFlow V6 Diesel, or was it just KM for conventional series 4wd with V6 gas engine?

If you read what I posted I meant K was for conventional series 4wd, the owner's manual states K-Conventional Cab (4x4) The wording is different but realistically what I wrote it means the same!!!!:
