69 Olds Rocket 350 in my 72?!
I am getting ready to put this engine in....I am told I will have to drill new holes into my frame for the mounts....that's ok....but I am very excited about this engine going in my truck....My original 350 is so tired....but this is only going to be temporary for about 3-5 years or so.....But I am going to rebuild the old 350 cause I found out I have one of the higher nickle blocks.

The are a few other modifications you will have to do. You will have to get the BOP plate to bolt the trainee to it and or an Old’s flywheel if it is a stick. Other than that it's no to bad

Rip,
I know I have to get the BOP Plate......but what else?......I know I have to get the HEI, starter, power steering pump, alternator and brackets for them. But I think that is it......if you know more on this subject....then please...do tell. |

look at the late 70s deisel trucks,you can use the stands & brackets(will be a weld in fit).the engine mount is the same as an Olds car. I ran a 455+ 030 in the longhorn for a while........pass anything but a gas station! A link to pics... http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn

Actually, i think the HEI is the same, but I may be mistaken.
My Pontiac has '72 big block motor mounts and it fits in there like it is supposed to go there. You may need to move the battery to the other side, an AUX battery tray would look stock like this. There will be many odds and ends you'll find out on the way there. What side is the fuel pump on? Mine is on the oposite side, and I'm kinda scared to see how they rigged it. If it is anything like the 6 foot long pos cable going over the engine, i wouldn't be suprised. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. If it is for sure an Oldsmobile 350, the firing order is right... But it is a counter-clockwise rotation as opposed to Chevy's Clockwise rotation.

I love Olds motors. If you have one apart some time, take a look at the crank journals. They're huge. Olds motors never wear out.

Olds motors rock sh!t!!!! I love those things... The motor mount tower idea from the 5.7 diesel trucks is an excellent idea...If you are working with a 2wd, why not use an olds tranny??? The distributors will not interchange between olds and chevrolet, they are different lengths and have a different size drive gear, the caps and rotors however will interchange.

What Type of tranny are you using auto or sick? The Fuel pump should not be an issue. As for the distributor you can get one from auto zone for about $100.00 plus you need the cap rotor button and coil. You will need different radiator hoses about $10 a piece the alternator is about 30 with a core as for the bracket you can find most of them at a bone yard for about 40. And as a suggestion I would go through the rear end and make sure its good and the u-joint are good. Trust me with the rocket in there you can twist all kinds of stuff with all that torque. So make sure the tranny will hold it to

Rip,
I am going to put a rebuilt turbo 350 with a shift kit in it.....UJoints are all brand new so I think they will be ok.....I will however need to replace the Carrier support bearing and straps on the rear end yoke....they seem stretched a little bit....but I can use the same alternator..... and the brackets I am going to pull from the bone yard.....they are a dime a dozen out here....Chevy will cost ya though. |
