Here's the dilemma....

I am in the process of restoring my 72 Sierra grande ( it was near perfect when I started ) and I'm stuck between returning it to the original build sheet specs....

or to build it to the style that I like. For example It has all the original parts on it now but I want to put a crome rear bumper instead of the painted step bumper and instead of the towing mirrors I want to put the classy crome rec. mirrors. The air horns in the picture are comming off and the front grill is being recromed as we speak. The truck is being repainted because the previous job was less that perfect and I,m rebeding the box with crome rails and oak boards.

I guess the question is will the trucks value diminish if the final restoration is slightly different than the build sheet?

Build it the way you want it, and aside from the mirrors, it sounds like everything will be able to be unbolted and replaced. I agree with everyone else, build the truck the way you want it, and enjoy it!

It sounds like the improvements you are planning on are good. Upgrading the truck with original "higher optioned" stuff should not hurt the value. When the chopping and supper custom stuff starts is when the value can really change.

Another vote for build it to your own style.

My 72 started as a moderately optioned 3/4 LWB camper special with a 350 and 4 wheel drums. Today (or will be soon) it is a lowered 1/2 ton SWB with a 496 BBC that runs high 11s with front disks, a hydroboost brake setup, a great stereo, 3.73 posi, etc, etc.

The factory original #'s resto's go for big money, but I have more fun with mine, im not affraid to drive it, and everything I have done has added worth to the vehicle.

Personally I would leave the factory parts, just becasue I think its neat to see one "the way it came". But, with my own trucks there not all original anyway, so I add fatory options and make them the way I want.

I do think it would be hard to take a bone stock survivor and change stuff. Like said above though, its your truck and the things you want to change are minor anyway.

It was looking really one sided there for a while....Thanks for the feedback guys, I think I will go for the "build the way I like" route but be very cautious to keep the truck as original as possible and anything that gets removed will be kept for any future owner
